Vehicle Detail
Regretfully, it is time to sell my project and fun car. This car was the closest to a classic sports car that I think Toyota has ever sold. Rumor has it that the design was done by Lotus for Toyota, but the mechanicals are all Toyota-reliable. A few details first: This is a 1989 Toyota MR2 Supercharged. This was the last year for the AW11 first-generation MR2, and only one of two years that Toyota sold a supercharged version of the MR2. The car starts and runs extremely well, and only has 140,241 original miles. Transmission shifts fine. Body condition overall is good, and interior condition is excellent. There are no tears in the seats, carpets are in good condition. The dashboard does have a couple of cracks (hidden by carpet dash mat), but the interior is otherwise fine. Minor rust issues, but no perforation or holes in the body. Vehicle passed both New Hampshire and New York safety inspections in the last few years. Non-smoking owner, absolutely no smoke smell in the car. Power windows, power locks, power mirrors and power antenna all work flawlessly. Heater fan & heater works fine & engine does not overheat. No radiator or coolant leaks. Suspension and brakes were recently rebuilt with the following new or nearly new components: New Tokico struts. Control arms, bushings and springs were replaced with items in like-new condition. New brake rotors. Replaced all four calipers with rebuilt units. Braided Stainless-steel brake lines. New brake pads roughly 4,000 miles ago. Front pads are Hawk HP Plus, rear are stock material. Other parts and upgrades: New engine oil pan. New valve cover gaskets. Starter was rebuilt in 2006. Hella 120db electric horn. Both trunk and engine cover have the Twos-R-Us hydraulic helpers installed so they stay open properly. Timing belt, accessory belts and water pump were replaced in 2010. Engine Oil is Castrol Syntec. Transmission oil is Red Line MT-90. Astrostart Two-Way remote starter and full alarm system with manual transmission interface. The remotes have some serious range, and will beep and flash at you to confirm that the car got the message. The clear glass T-Tops were professionally tinted to reduce the solar oven effect. I also have the factory sun shades. The side and rear window were professionally tinted with a medium tint to help protect the interior from UV damage. Radio is a Sony Mobile-ES AM/FM/Cassette head unit with an external A/D/S 20w amplifier. This isn't much of a stereo, but with the factory 3" speaker sizes, it seemed silly to do much unless I was going to start hacking on the car to install bigger speakers, which I didn't want to do. Power antenna for the radio works. The car is currently rolling on a set of the triangle wheels that were stock on the normally-aspirated MR2's, I am including with the car a set of the "Teardrop" wheels that were factory stock on the Supercharged car. I'm also including with the car the following spare components: Used set of air conditioning lines. Set of headlight assemblies, including motors. Current ones work fine, but I got these for a song and couldn't pass them up. Unrusted exhaust heat shield. Shield currently on the car is perforated with rust. Set of polyurethane suspension bushings. I decided not to install them because I wanted to stay in SCCA stock class. Large box of miscellaneous spare parts. That's the good, here's the not-so-good: Clutch pedal feel is not great, although it still works fine, and I suspect that the master and/or slave cylinders need to be replaced. Air conditioning is inoperative and has been depressurized for an extended period of time. While the body is in overall good condition, the car has been in two accidents in the past: One involving damage to the front end, and the other involving damage to the left rear quarter. Neither body repair was performed particularly well. The front damage was repair using body panels from a red car, and the paint work that painted them grey was mediocre in the extreme. When the plastic front bumper was painted, they did not add flex agent to the paint, and so the paint in the bumper is badly cracked. I have a brand-new unpainted/never-installed plastic front bumper that I am including with the car. The dents in the left rear quarter were filled with bondo, and there's signs of rust issues brewing under the paint and bondo. I have a clean, undamaged left rear quarter panel from another car that I am including that should provide all the materials needed to redo this repair properly. The two-piece plastic front air dam is pretty chewed up, and I haven't been able to find a replacement. I still have the part, but I removed it from the car to avoid having it fall off. There is a very, very minor oil leak from the firewall side of the engine in the general vicinity of the distributor that I haven't been able to track down. Not enough to require adding oil, but leaves a few spots on my garage floor. The Supercharger still runs quietly and boosts properly, but loses supercharger oil at an rapid (and expensive) rate and needs to be rebuilt with new seals. Exhaust is functional, but is starting to show signs of age. Tires, well, they hold air. Otherwise, they're old, the tread is nearly worn out, they've been pretty badly cooked and they're dry-rotted. Assume that this car will need new tires before you drive it more than a trivial distance. If you want to drive it home, I will be happy to work with the purchaser to get new tires installed before you arrive to pick it up. According to my research, there were only around 3,000 of the Supercharged MR2's sold in the United States, and twenty years later there are VERY FEW of them LEFT. This may be just about your only chance to own one of these rare and fun cars. I would stress that this car has not been modified or "enhanced" in any way. Nothing has been done to this car that would compromise it's reliability or longevity.
