1927 Ford Model T Miles: 99999 Stock#: DELT1927 Engine: Body Style: Transmission: Manual Interior Color: Gray VIN: MODELT1927 Exterior Color: Green Click the center image to see full size images --> car information Overwhelmingly voted "The Most Important Car of the 20th Century"; called "The Car That Taught America To Drive"; the first car to be manufactured on assembly lines with completely interchangeable parts and "The first affordable car." It is hard to even begin an article about a Ford Model T, if only because of the great list of firsts associated with it. Imagine, however, that the car being described is not only a proud member of this great list of firsts, but also of a much, much smaller list, one where the Model T in question is one of the last. Sitting behind the door at Benchmark Classics, America's Hot Rod, Custom, Specialty and Muscle Car Playground in Middleton, Wisconsin is yet another coveted piece of automotive history. This is a 1927 Ford Model T Coupe, one of the very last of these legends to come off of Henry Ford's legendary Highland Park, Michigan assembly line. In fact, this Tin Lizzie's serial number (T's shared serial and engine numbers) places its production date as April of '27; this really is one of the VERY LAST of the Model T Fords! Ask almost anyone, automotive expert or just somebody off the street, what they know of the Model T and one of the first answers you'll likely get is some variation of Henry Ford's famous admonition that "You can have it in any color you want, as long as it is black!" Well, this one is green (with black fenders and, surprisingly, in 1927 you couldn't even get one in all black. Just like the initial run of Model Ts from 1908 to 1912, you could get one in Grey, Green or Red, depending on what body style you chose. In 1913, all the cars came in Blue with black fenders. From then on until 1926, it really was black or nothing. Henry Ford did things his way and, with 15 million Flivvers built in America alone (never mind the huge number assembled in the rest of the world) Ford's customers did seem to mind the lack of choice. Benchmark Classics' '27 T is what the vast majority of collectors of this car want: A car in terrific, near original condition that is ready to hit the road. - It has the original engine. (I'd ask you to think about that: this 1927 automobile, now in its 10th decade, not only has its original engine, it is ready to drive. Wow.) - It comes with electric start, first made as an option in 1926 and standard on the '27s. There is a crank, but by '27 most drivers wanted to have electric start, not the opportunity to break their thumb! - Steel wire wheels also came standard in '27, replacing the well-known wooden-spoked wheels used up until then. - The dashboard contains but one instrument, an "Amperes Discharge" meter. This car was not equipped with the optional Speed-O-Meter. - The rear window is equipped with the optional window shade, so beloved of generations of backseat Romeos. - A leather fan belt driven generator supplies electrical needs in a Model T, until you hit high gear, when a more powerful magneto kicks in. This is used primarily to power the fender-mounted headlamps, which on this '27 have great, original glass. - The tan horsehair interior is, like the exterior green, very close to the original hue. Those of us not raised around a Model T are invariably confused by the controls. The steering wheel is home to two stalks or levers, one to each side. The stalk on the right controls the gas; on the left is the lever that controls the spark. There are three pedals, but they sure are not the ones we're used to. The pedal on the left is for high and low gear; the one on the right is the brake. And the one in the middle? That's reverse! The staff at Benchmark Classics promises driving lessons for the uninitiated. When most of us think of an "antique car" the picture that resides in our heads is a Ford Model T. This 1927 Model T Coupe will fulfill the dream of so many collectors to be able to own, drive, honor and maintain a real piece of history. This is it folks, one of the very last Ford Model Ts. It is waiting for you to fire it up and hit the road. You'll be leaving from Benchmark Classics in Middleton, Wisconsin, heading to wherever your heart desires.
