The reason, of course was the Trans Am, the Sports Car Club of America sponsored series held at the great road racing courses of America, from Southern California's Riverside to Lime Rock in Connecticut, Watkins Glen in New York, and our country's greatest road course, Wisconsin's Road America at Elkhart Lake. Every pony car manufacturer was represented with a factory team and top driving talent, many of whom are true legends today: Chevrolet had the powerful Chaparral team from Texas behind the Chevy Camaro Z28 with owner and Can Am champion Jim Hall, Ed Leslie, and future rally and F1 star "Quick Vic" Elford. The eventual champion Ford Boss 302 Mustangs were prepared by Bud Moore and driven by Parnelli Jones and George Follmer. Jerry Titus had the Pontiac TransAm, and Roger Penske's Sunoco AMC Javelin team starred Mark Donohue and Peter Revson. Sam Posey, occasionally with Tony Adamowicz or Ronnie Buckman, drove Ray Caldwell's Autodynamics Dodge Challenger TA. For Plymouth, the All American Racing (AAR) 'Cudas were handled by Dan Gurney and Swede Savage. Behind the big door at Benchmark Classics in Middleton, Wisconsin, sits one of these legendary warhorses, a real 1970 Plymouth AAR 'Cuda. Just 2724 were built over March and April of 1970, meeting the production quota mandated by the Trans Am rules. Imagine, YOU could have your own AAR 'Cuda, the car that racing legend Dan Gurney not only bulit for racing but drove in his final race. Benchmark Classics' AAR 'Cuda comes in Rallye Red with a black vinyl top, black interior and black padded Rallye dash with a tach. You will find buckets with a console inside. Down each side is the unique AAR 'Cuda "Strobe Stripe," a graphic that starts at the rear with the AAR logo shield and then sweeps toward the front in a series of expanding lines. There's nothing quite like it! This AAR 'Cuda has a 4-speed 833 heavy duty transmission shifted with one of those cool Mopar pistol grips. There's a period correct battery, black wheels, dog dish hubcaps and what the reviewers back in the Spring of 1970 referred to as a "NASA-inspired" fiberglass AAR hood. It has power steering and power brakes. The body numbers match and it comes with its original fender tags and broadcast sheet. No worries: this rocket began its life as an AAR 'Cuda. It is the real deal. The rotisserie restoration of this famous Pony car will inspire you, but probably not like what happens when you open the hood or, for that matter, the throttle. Sitting in there is one of those engines whose reputation way outstrips the production numbers. The Mopar 340 Six Pack in the 'Cuda was often called the "Semi-Hemi" or the "Little Hemi." With a "Six Pack" set up of three dual-throated carbs, lots and lots of air rushed in through a necessarily huge air cleaner. And the fancy factory exhaust exiting through trumpets in front of the rear wheels made sure that air got back out of there in style! This tough little V-8 was destroked to 303 inches to meet the Trans Am racing rules of "under 5 liters" (about 305 cubic inches.) But street versions got to keep all 340, and you'll know it when you stand on the gas. All that power is fed through an 8 and 3/4 inch Sure Grip 3.55 rear-end. It'll just go and go. Sooo... Go ahead, find a back twisty road, picture yourself surrounded by the likes of Mark Donohue, Sam Posey, Parnelli Jones and Jim Hall. You're Dan Gurney, and you have a REAL AAR 'Cuda to show 'em how its done. This doesn't have to be just a dream. YOU can own your own AAR 'Cuda. It is sitting behind the big door at Benchmark Classics, America's Hot Rod, Custom, Specialty and Muscle Car Playground, ready to test drool. Don't just think about 1970. BE 1970!
