1979 "Epilogue" Convertible restored STILL A VERY SENSIBLE WAY TO FLIP YOUR LID! Thats what the caption read on one of the ads for the 1979 Bug Convertible. This is a 79 Triple Black "Epilogue" Superbeetle Convertible. As the story goes, since this was the last year of production of the Bug convertible, VW decided to offer a special model to honor the first VW convertible which was triple black and make this "Epilogue" model with a Black body, Black interior and a Black convertible top. Only ONE of this model was offered to each VW dealer which makes this a rare car. The problem with these last Beetles (75-79) is they were made with an electronic fuel injection system that was a nightmare for buyers and the mechanics at the dealers who had to work on them! They would idle fast, idle slow, stall, accelerate poorly etc, etc. 32+ years later they arent any better! Thats great if you want a car to look at, but for reliability you really want one that has been converted to carburation. Many after being driven just a few years many were parked outside and rusted away. I have a stack of paperwork, and the original vanity plate "MY 79 VW", that came with this car and it was owned by the same family since NEW! It just had a complete body off chassis restoration. Chassis and all suspension components were sandblasted, all new floor pans were mig welded in, coated with black epoxy primer, all seams sealed with seam sealer and then everything sprayed with 3m rubberized undercoating, new brake steel/rubber fluid lines, wheel cylinders and master cylinder. Rear gas shocks, front end completely rebuilt with new strut cartridges, ball joints, tie rods, urethane control arm and sway bar bushings rebuilt steering rack and a computerized alignment. This car tracks straight and doesnt have the typical Superbeetle shakes over 55! The engine has been completely rebuilt using the original block. It was line bored, has new bearings, cylinders and pistons, heads redone with new guides, valves and seals. New push rod tubes, all tin refinished in original satin black color, clutch, muffler, Danish heater boxes coated with gray POR-15, 009 distributor, wires, alternator w/ internal regulator, urethane intake boots with a new 34 pict carburator, fuel lines, 2 in line steel filters and a new electric fuel pump. Troublesome fuel injection has been removed in favor of trouble free carburation (1974 style) making this a dependable driver, this car sat since 1992 due to malfunctioning original injection system, (it still has the last inspection sticker on it from 1992), luckily it was in a garage! The top was removed, top frame was in excellent condition without any rot and was sanded, painted with epoxy black and satin black paint. The complete top was replaced along with a white headliner, new padding, cables and rear window seal. The windshield seal was also replaced along with the silver beading which makes it look correct. It has all new Kuhmo tires, refinished original sport wheels and new stainless wheel trim rings. The body has had any rust cut out (which wasnt very much) and 18 ga steel mig welded in the proper way with epoxy sprayed internally into hidden areas. It has the original rust free heater channels, convertible only side supports and YES, the heater works!. Body was epoxy primed and refinished with base coat, clear coat urethane which gives it a very durable finish. Assembled with new running boards, black fender beading and all fender and bumper mounting bolts and washers are stainless steel so they will NEVER rust!. New chrome trim= all side trim, rear fender splash guards, door handle fingernail guards, rear louver trim, headlight rings and a new "Karmann" emblem. The bumper trim pcs missing in the pictures have new pcs in place now. The interior has new charcoal carpets, heat/ sound insulation in rear window well, side door panels, front seats rebuilt with new padding, backrest release cables, beautiful TMI seat covers and front HEATED SEATS for cruising on cool nights with the top down. The dash pad is original and in excellent without any cracks that they all seem to have and has the special rose wood insert and original leather wrapped steering wheel. The wiper arms were blasted and refinished in satin black and have new Bosch wiper blades as they came originally. It has an Alpine cassette stereo in the dash with an Alpine 12 CD changer in the rear window well. I have the original keys to the glovebox and engine compartment, owners manual and warranty booklet. It also has the original black top boot. This car also came with original VW Air Conditioning which was never a good idea for a beetle. It looks like all the parts are there except the compressor. Keeping gas mileage in mind, I opted not to rebuild the A/C system, but even though it doesnt blow ice cold air, having it gives you the powerful blower that pushes air through the dash vents. This car wasnt restored years ago or by a previous owner, it was finished in July 2011, only has a couple hundred miles on it and all parts were purchased this year!
