Vehicle Detail
This is a great 1972 Chevelle Malibu. I have added the SS trim. It started life as 13637 Malibu 2 Door Sport Coupe. The VIN Number is 1D37H2R534405. The VIN indicates that the car originally was equipped with a 165 hp 350 cubic inch V8. I imagine the transmission was a TH 350 because of the horseshoe shifter in the console. The following information is from the trim tag: ST – 72-13637 A51 – Astro Bucket Seats PNT – 43 Gulf Green Trim – 713 Dark Green Vinyl The following information on the car is given to the best of my ability. The car is being sold as is – where is and no warranty on the condition of the car is expressed or implied. Ask plenty of questions before you bid. If you would like a picture of a portion of the car or would like to see the car in person, please ask. When I purchased the car in September of 2006 the engine and transmission were gone but the car was otherwise complete. I have never been a fan of green cars so I changed the exterior color to white and the interior to black. The entire interior was new at the time of the restoration. I did not do the best job on installing the headliner at the sail panels. Please see the picture. You might be able to do better. The dash pad has a small break on the left hand side. It has been repaired, but does not look perfect. The body had rust in the normal places (under the vinyl top, under the accelerator pedal and the front fender dog legs). The trunk pan did not have any rust. All of the rust has been repaired and the car was painted in September of 2007. The body is not laser straight but very presentable. The SS Hood is an aftermarket product. The engine in the car is a 1972 four bolt main out of a GMC pickup. The suffix code is TDJ. I restored the pickup in 1992 and drove it to Chicago for a job. The Chicago winters ate the trucks body. I parted out the truck and kept the engine. The engine was rebuilt during the restoration. The crank was turned, the block bored and flat top piston installed. The heads have a 3 angle valve job, new springs and Erson roller tipped rocker arms. The cam is a Competition Cams 280 with hydraulic lifters and new pushrods. I opened up the engine and checked everything before installing it in the Chevelle. I would guess the engine has less than 10,000 miles on it. It starts immediately and does not smoke. The engine also has an Edelbrock manifold and carburetor and new HEI distributor. I converted the transmission to a Saginaw 4-speed. The ratios are 1st 2.84, 2nd 2.01, 3rd 1.35 and 4th 1.00. The differential is a 10 bolt positraction unit with 3.08 gears. The code on the axel tube is FK1116. I pulled the differential out of a 1969 El Camino. The car is very fast and will put you back in the seat. Acceleration is amazing with the combination of the 3.08 rear end and 2.84 first gear. The second gear is much like a 2.20 1st gear in a Muncie transmission. The best part is you still get the benefits of a 1.00 4th gear with blinding acceleration. There are no problems with the drive train except the syncro for 2nd gear must be worn. Up shifting is great, but when you down shift into second you will get a little grind. I often double clutch when down shifting to avoid the small grind. The car was originally an AC car. All of the AC components have been removed. The car originally came with drum brakes in the front. I installed disc brakes and A arms from a 1972 El Camino SS. The A arms have polyurethane bushings Below listed are the additional parts that I installed on the car: New Hurst Competition Plus 4 Speed Shifter with Back Up Light Switch New Clutch, Pressure Plate and Throw-Out Bearing New Roller Pilot Bearing New Aluminum Power Steering Brackets Rebuilt Power Steering Gear, Hoses and Pump Rebuilt Brake Calipers and new pads New Rear Brake Drums, wheel cylinders, hardware and brake shoes. I will include a tire that holds air just in case you need it. Corvette 15” Rally Wheels with New Trim Rings Fan Shroud Electric rear radio antenna New UMI Performance Tube Upper and Lower rear control arms with zerk grease fittings and polyurethane bushings New Rear Sway Bar New Flotech Tube Exhaust Headers New Covan Classic Burl Wood 6 Hole Dash with Autometer Gauges and new speedometer cable New Battery Tray New Hood Hinges and Springs New Heater Core Rebuilt Starter New High Volume Aluminum Water Pump New Front and Rear Bumpers New Ignition, Door and Trunk Locks New AC Delete Cover – The cover replaces the evaporator core box that takes up a great deal of under hood space. New Trunk Mat New Door, Window and Trunk seals New Window Felts New SS Grill, Rear Bumper and Fender Emblems New Hood Insulation New Radiator, Hoses and Cap The forgoing information on the car is given to the best of my ability.
