1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Click Image for Photos 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL In the current issue of Motor Trend Classic, Matt Stone writes that the W107 series “was the premium brand luxury sport roadster of choice for much of [the 1970s and 1980s].” This 450SL was donated to the Petersen Automotive Museum in 2007 by the original owner and has spent the past few years in an environmentally controlled storage facility. The car has been well taken care of and will make a great daily driver. Drivetrain: The Mercedes-Benz listed here retains its stock 4.5-liter V-8 engine with 3-speed automatic transmission. It starts and runs well, although we’ve only driven it around the facility, so we can’t vouch for how it will run above parking lot speeds. It pulls to the left when braking, but otherwise the brakes work fine. A new battery and alternator were recently installed. Exterior: Doors, hood and trunk fit well and shut tightly. All exterior lights work. The silver paint looks good, except for a few scratches and chips. Most of the paint is factory but there are some areas where the body seems to have been repainted. This 450SL comes with the original removable hardtop and a folding soft top, which appears to be new and in very good shape except for the plastic windows which have slightly yellowed. We have had no problems raising and lowering the manual soft top or attaching and removing the hardtop. The soft top folds easily underneath the metal tonneau cover and the hardtop fits securely. The tires are brand new Michelins with plenty of tread. This 450SL is equipped with the desirable small bumpers from 1973, the last year of the smaller-sized ones. Beginning in 1974, Mercedes-Benz added 8 inches of rubber to the front and rear bumpers to comply with the U.S. National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration regulations. Interior: The red interior is the standard vinyl upholstery, M-B Tex, which is in good shape and has no rips or tears. The well-padded surfaces of the 450SL’s interior were included for safety and quiet. This car is also equipped with air-conditioning, power windows and factory installed Becker Europa II stereo with the optional power antenna on the left front fender. The radio and dash gauges all appear to work. Overall: Please keep in mind that this Mercedes-Benz has been sitting in storage for the past several years. While it runs and drives, we suggest that a qualified mechanic take a look at the car before deeming it “roadworthy.” The 450SL is currently registered in the state of California under PNO.
