Vehicle Detail
2002 Mazda Protege5 wagon 2002 Mazda Protege5 wagon with 160,366 miles. The car has been in the family since new, has a clean title, and has never been in a collision. Until a few weeks ago it has been our daily driver. Currently it is in non-drivable condition - for parts or repair. We recently put a few hundred dollars into repairs in the front end [listed below], but the car has reached an age where mechanical problems are beginning to snowball. Lets start with the BAD: Alternator seized [belt could be removed to confirm car runs / move the car a very short distance] Rear passenger-side strut blown Rear passenger-side top mount rusted out; the strut is poking through the shock tower [the tower is not rusted, only the mount, it is a straightforward fix, but makes the car un-drivable] Rear passenger-side e-brake mechanism not working [caliper may be frozen] Rear drivers-side caliper sticks intermittently Both rear toe-adjusters frozen [or so says the alignment shop - I haven’t confirmed] Front top spring seats are badly rusted [but not broken yet] hood latch doesn’t like to release [one person needs to pull the level while another pulls the hood up] cruise control not working rear wiper motor doesn’t work [went through 3 - then gave up once it was out of warranty] The body is in okay shape overall. It has a few bumps and scrapes but is generally fairly solid. The rear quarter panels are rusting severely around the wheel arches. Currently it is covered-up with blue duct-tape as required to pass Massachusetts inspection. I removed the tape on one side to take the photo below. The car is originally from central NY -- the roads are heavily salted in the winters so this body-rot is not unexpected. The lower door seams show traces of rust as well. Now the GOOD: The car has always been in the family since new and has been serviced regularly. The drivetrain is in great shape; the engine is smooth and has good power and the automatic transmission shifts flawlessly. The car still has it's snow tires on it from last winter; they will be good for a couple more seasons at least. The car has a locking bicycle roof rack [keys included]. The interior is clean, with no stains, smokers smell, etc. All interior electronics work flawlessly.
