Vehicle Detail

1972 Volvo P1800e vin number 1826353038676 From 1961 to 1973 a total of 47,492 P1800s were produced (37,407 coupes 8,077 estate sport wagons). 1972 was the last year of production for the P1800 coupe. This was built in December of 1971 and was the 1133rd one constructed of 1865 built from August 1971 to August 1972. This car was purchased 5/5/1972 in Des Moines, Iowa. I am the second owner. I purchased the car from an estate in the fall of 2005, with 52,415 miles showing, it now has 55,700 miles. I believe this to be the actual mileage. This is a fine looking survivor. It is always a head turner. Most people ask “What is it?” The car has placed very well in the shows I have entered. The condition of the car is as follows: The 2 liter 4 cylinder engine seems very sound. Oil pressure is a very good, 35 psi at idle and 60+ psi indicated at 65 mph. Very little oil is used and I change oil and the filter. It runs cool, but can nudge up to center when in traffic or A/C is on. The previous owner tinkered with the fuel injection. Why, I am not sure. But he installed a button that operates the cold start injector. It is like having a manual choke. You have to push the button when it is cold, but seems to work all right. This vehicle runs and drives well. Manual 4 speed transmission shifts fine and even the electric overdrive works. Clutch seems fine. The car handles well and steers straight. The best I can find the car was painted in 1994. It has a clear coat. The paint is in pretty good shape, good shine. It does have a few 1/8” +- chips and clear coat has a couple of 1” damaged areas. I had new metal replacement panels installed lower front fenders. This was to repair rust. Original chrome is in mostly fair condition. I replaced the rain gutter trim at the roof. The rubber around the small side windows is in poor shape. Rear window defroster works for the most part. All wheels are powder coated, and are ok. One center cap is missing. All gauges work including the clock. The prior owner added Smith oil temperature (centigrade) gauge in place of the stock one. Stock gauge included. Am /Fm cassette Radio works. The A/C blows cold but I have to have recharged about every other year. The dash has no cracks. The seats are ok but would need to be redone at some point. The prior owner added: Tilt /removable sunroof Window tint Intermediate wiper control (does not work) VOLVO 240 turbo Virgo 15” rims Rear sway bar. Halogen headlights Sankyo A/C compressor These are items that I have addressed: Air conditioner converted to R134a All fluids replaced New air, water temp. sensors. New plug wires New injectors seals K&N air filter New distributor cap, rotor and Pertronix electronic ignition New battery (2007) New Grant wood rim steering wheel New exhaust from Scandix New rear brake pads New KYB shocks New Yokohama tires (less than 300 miles) New upper and lower radiator hoses New engine belts. Chrome valve cover. Also included are: - Owner’s manual, Volvo service manual, Haynes manual, VSA D-Jet fix-it booklet and many receipts. - Cast “Volvo” valve cover, two exhaust headers, front grill, electronic control units, pressure sensors, car cover, stock steering wheel, various engine and electrical components. I found the car to be fairly easy to maintain. Although a rare car, parts are available from many sources. Be aware this is a 1972 European sports car; you will have spots of oil on the garage floor. I am not going to say it does not need anything; you will find typical wear and tear for a 39 years old automobile. I have tried to described the car to the best of my knowledge.
