Vehicle Detail
Untitled Document 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air, 96% original (A rare beauty, 3 owners, solid car) This rare beauty with 40k original miles is ready to drive. I bought her three years ago with 35K and drove the last 5k miles with no mechanical problems. This beauty came from Toluca, Illinois and I'm the third owner. The original owner Ms. McCully of Toluca, IL. purchased it in 1957 and her son, Clyde McCully, inherited in 1983. Upon his passing in 2007, the family kept it in storage and sold it in June of 2008. When I handed in the title to Illinois Secretary of State, I regret not making a copy. The title stated it had 30K miles in 1983 upon transfer from mother to son. She rides like it's 1957 and is Sweet, Smooth and Sassy. This past father's day weekend, she drove over 50 miles modeling at two car shows in one day at the Mecca Restaurant and Willow Creek church Dad's day event. She's modeled in several car shows over the past three years and was part of the Lemont, IL. Classic Car Club for two seasons. She spent several summer nights watching movies with her current family at Cascade Drive-In in St. Charles, IL. All she needs now is you to drive her regularly, give her a bath, change her oil and she'll give you enjoyable miles. Some minor restoration could help but not necessary. She's also received a lot of head turns, whistles and compliments from people. Unfortunately, I need to sell her to jump start my son's college savings and pay off bills. What's 96% original? Everything... ---The overall interior is in good shape for a 54 year old car and is 100% original. There was a small split on the front and rear bench seats from stitching wear and was repaired when I first purchased the vehicle. Vinyl stitching was used instead of cloth for durability and longevity. ---The exterior is in good condition. There are a few chips in the paint due to parking lot doors. There is minor surface rust here and there visible in the door jambs but not corroded through the metal. Hand sanding would remove most of it. The under body is solid as best as I can see. I applied an undercoating a few years ago and never drove it in winter weather where road salt could damage the metal. ---All glass is in good shape as is the chrome. All the windows work. There are a few small bubbles in the front lower windshield. It looks like someone shot a BB at the windshield. The rear chrome bumper still shines and is in good shape. The front bumper is new (see below for more info). ---The motor and trans are all original with 40K original miles. ---Original T3 headlights What's 4% non-original? ---added a vacuum canister to boost the vacuum driven wipers which could easily be removed and the wipers will still work. ---selected an inexpensive option to replace front bumper as compared to re-chroming. The original bumper is available and in fair to good condition for re-chroming. I included a picture of the original front bumper taken at a hot dog drive-in before the bumper was replaced. Please note: If you want the original bumper, I will wrap it and do my best to place it in the back seat for shipping. Otherwise, it might need to be shipped separately at your cost. ---added 4 lap seat belts so my 11 year old son could ride safely. This could easily be removed. ---My guess is she was re-painted to its original color back in the early 80s. It's very hard to determine because the door jambs, under the hood and trunk are very close in color. I would rate the paint job a solid 9 out of 10. Perhaps I'm wrong it was painted at all. What's New? ---As mentioned, the front bumper was replaced, added seat belts and vacuum canister. ---She has 4 new P205/75R14 Coker Classic 2 3/8" Whitewall radial tires with 5k miles on them. ---Replaced the master cylinder and four wheel drum brakes. ---Replaced valve and side rocker cover gaskets ---She doesn't leak when it rains. I bought new weather stripping for the doors and trunk but haven't replaced it. This $139 value purchased from Eckler's Classic Chevy comes with the car. ---Rear air shocks Also included with this rare beauty: ---Original owner's manual and various repair records ---Three books 1.) Chevrolet Master Shop Manual 2.) How to Restore Your 1957 Chevy 3.) 1957 Passenger Factory Assembly Instructional Manual (very useful when front bumper was replaced) ---Four dashboard clocks. Dash clock doesn't work. I was having too much fun driving her to take time and work on this. Other Info Engine: 235ci 6-Cylinder dubbed the "Blue Flame" Automatic transmission Manual Steering and Brakes The color is Robin's Egg blue and white top The glass is in good condition This vehicle is garage kept For more pictures, please visit my '57 Bel-Air page (http://tinyurl.com/57BelAir) How did I determine percentage of originality? I took off 1% for everything not original with the car. If you differ on this scale, buy the car and place your own rating.
