You've all heard tales of the ones that got away, so let me tell you a different story- the Buick that followed me home. One spring morning in 2000, I was up in the San Fernando Valley and stopped by the Memory Lane Collector Car Salvage Yard to have a quick look around and see if there was anything new. No sooner was I through the gate than I spotted this near mint looking 1969 Le Sabre 400 Hardtop that seemed to be saying "Help Me." Of course, I had to walk right over. The car has just arrived. It was a remarkably straight and nice Le Sabre with cold air and just over 48,000 miles. It was obviously garaged and well cared for. The air was even cold. It had been a one owner car and belonged to a lady in Santa Monica- it had license frames from Cummings Buick (and still does) who were located on Santa Monica Blvd. The Champagne Mist paint appeared to be totally original with only minor patina. The vinyl roof looked as new. The interior was in very fine original condition with no cracking on the dash or door panels, and only a couple of minor splits in the front seat. The original owner had just passed away and her family had donated it a local charity. They had no idea that the charity sold all of the cars immediately to a junkyard. (And that's why it has a CA salvage title. It has never been wrecked or damaged, but was sold through a salvage yard.) I knew it didn't belong there and bought it on the spot. It was with a sign of relief that I started her up and drove her out of the yard. I wasn't sure who she was for, but I knew I was saving her for someone. It didn't take too long to figure it out. At her first outing, a collector friend came up and wanted her. He had a large stable of postwar American cars and the Buick reminded him of a car his father had new. The question was answered. He has owned the car ever since and taken it on many enjoyable adventures. It has been maintained in excellent condition, always garaged and covered, and has been a reliable old girl and a joy to have around. Now lack of storage dictates that she be sold and I am assisting him in finding a home for the sweet old Buick. The equipment is probably a bit better than average for the day. It has a 350 V8 with 4 bbl carb, a THM-400 Automatic Transmission (the 400 stood for the transmission, not the engine. Crazy or what?), power steering and brakes, factory air conditioning (only tepid when tested), AM/ FM radio, power driver's seat, door edge guards, body side moldings, deluxe wheel covers, vinyl roof, remote driver's side mirror, and probably a few more things I am missing. He's put just over 10,000 miles on the car since he's owned it and done a lot of maintenance to keep it in top driving condition. Recent service includes: Five new WSW radial tires with about 1,000 miles on them, a new starter, transmission flush, heater core, tune up last spring including belts, hoses and coolant flush, a new battery, master cylinder, valve cover and intake manifold gaskets, water pump, and the fuel tank was boiled out and a new sending unit installed. In addition, he located the correct NOS grooved vinyl upholstery and reupholstered both front and rear seats so the interior is just amazing. The exterior is very fine original., still sporting the Champagne Mist Lacquer with only a few fine chips and flaws from forty two years of gentle usage. There is some mild fading on the hood and deck, but it's way too nice and too original to consider repainting. The top still looks as new, the chrome and stainless glisten, and there is not a speck of rust anywhere. It's a lifelong garaged Southern California car, and it doesn't get much better than that. What does it need? The clock doesn't work, the A/C is not cold, and it needs an appreciative new owner. That's really all I can think of. It runs and drives beautifully, it's smooth and responsive, The THM400 transmission is a dream, it's quiet and smooth and everything a Buick is supposed to be. And being a four door hardtop, it's great if you are a collector with a family or if you like to take people out to dinner in a timeless American car. I can't possibly begin to show you the car with 24 pictures, so follow this Photo Link. There are 119 pictures in the album. If you'd like a very fine original example of a 60's full sized Buick that's ready to drive and enjoy, you owe it to yourself to give this one serious consideration. We're placed an extremely reasonable reserve on the car and you couldn't begin to restore one for our price. Please feel free to email me with any questions. Thank you for looking and happy bidding!
