Benchmark Classics, America's Hot Rod, Custom, Specialty and Muscle Car Playground, now located in Middleton, Wisconsin, has one of those: a 1973 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe that just drips with period authenticity. 1973 was a year of transition in America and the '73 Vette began a series of transitions for Corvette. Here are the basics: This Stingray is a numbers matching 454 Coupe. It is a T-top car with a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 3-speed automatic transmission. The big LS4 454 pumper puts out 275 horses and is equipped with a Rochester Quadra-jet 4-barrel, just as it left the St. Louis assembly line in April of 1973. This is a driver, ready for some fun. The recently applied paint is the original color, code 927, which the factory describes simply as Dark Blue. It has a black leather interior, trim code 404, and comes with factory air conditioning and power windows. One of the transitional features that clearly identify this car as a '73 is the urethane bumper out front (essentially the entire nose of the car) matched with chrome bumpers out back. This was the only year for this combination and was the result of tightening government safety regulations. 1973 was also the first year for the dome hood, which has since been retrofitted to thousands of '68-'72 C3s. This, of course had nothing to do with safety regulations! With power steering, power brakes and recent Firestone Firehawk rubber, this is a well-equipped '73 Corvette. It even has a trunk-mounted chrome luggage rack, very appropriate for the era. There is a great deal of documentation of the history of this car. If you've been considering the purchase of a real piece of 70's nostalgia that can be driven like it is 1973 all over again, this is a time capsule to check out immediately. Turn on the radio and you just might hear the bulletin that Spiro Agnew has resigned as Vice President or Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band!"
