Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is this very nice, low mileage 65 Corvair Monza convertible. I am selling the car for a fellow club member and customer who has owned the car since 1981. We believe the car has had 3 owners. The mileage (35,000) is also believed correct, and all the documentation and physical evidence supports this as a low miles car that has not had a complete restoration. In the last few years, the current owner has used the car less and less, so he decided it’s time to pass this great convertible to its next caring owner. This Monza is painted the 1 year only Evening Orchid color with black top and interior, which is the original combination for this car. It is equipped with the 110HP engine, powerglide automatic, comfort and convenience group (outside rear view mirror, inside day /night mirror, 2 speed wiper/washer with glass refill bottle), AM pushbutton radio with front antenna, and deluxe front seat belts. We don’t know a lot about the car’s history prior to 1981, but we do know it was sold new at Rockebach Chevrolet in Illinois on 6/25/65 ; we have the original invoice and protect-o-plate book. The car was Ziebarted, and has all the period decals for that service in place. The Ziebarding has held up pretty well, none of it is peeling or cracking off. At some point prior to 1981, the car was repainted its original color in the original lacquer type paint. Aftermarket body side molding and front fender reflectors were added at that time. The repaint may have been prompted by some body damage to the left front fender between the gas filler door and the driver’s door; there is presently some cracking of the finish in this area indicating some body filler. This repaired area is up high, at the beltline, indicating accident damage, not rust repair. Under the ‘right’ light conditions, the paint on the lower half drivers door does not exactly match the rest of the car, so we must presume some additional paintwork was done here after the complete repaint operation. Again, everything points to accident damage, not rust repair. I was able to catch the mismatch in the one side view photo. An alarm system was added at some point as well, with accompanying door jamb, deck, and hood switches, as well as the master key switch on the left quarter panel. The current owner has kept excellent records since his purchase in 1981; we have all receipts for any work of consequence, as well as receipts for all parts. Repairs of note over the years include viton push rod tube seals, alignments, idler arm, relay rod bushing, rear springs and shocks, fan bearing, carburetor rebuilds, Allison electronic ignition added, and a rebuilt alternator. The original windshield was replaced with a new tinted one about 10 years ago due to a stone chip A new top, carpet, and trunk carpeting were installed in the early 90’s. The rest of the interior remains original and in fine condition. The top boot is a reproduction from Clarks, purchased just after the current owner bought the car, as the original boot was missing when he acquired it. The car has high quality sheepskin covers on the front seats; the seats are fine underneath. I pulled back the covers as best as I could without actually removing them to get a couple of pictures of the seat vinyl. The buyer can remove the covers completely if they prefer a stock appearance. . Cosmetically, there are some nicks and scratches in the paint in various places, the worst of it being a scrape on the top half of the right front fender, and the previously mentioned cracks in the filler on the Lf fender. The paint shine is still good. For a 30+ year old lacquer job, it looks pretty darn nice. The car has never seen snow and rarely been in the rain during the current owners’ watch. The doors open and close properly with the top up or down. The door jambs, lower windshield frame, fender bottoms and other typical problem spots look solid. The ends of the rocker panels, inside the wheel wells, a common rust area, are fully intact with their original rubber plugs/flaps. The only rust through I can find is in the right rocker panel, there are some small holes- about 1/8” diameter- about the middle of the outside. The bottom of that rocker looks fine, no rust through or bubbles. I have tried to picture this area in detail for you. The left rocker looks fine. The chrome and trim is all quite presentable, and the glass free of any nasty scratches. Mechanically, this car runs and drives quite well. The engine retains its original finish and features. Correct carburetors, stock type exhaust, damper doors and perimeter seals all in good condition. There is almost no blow by. The trans shifts well, the differential is quiet as are all the wheel bearings. The car has P185/80Rx13 whitewall radials with a '06 manufacture date; the stock jack and handle are in place Everything works properly on this car including the signals, heater and radio. The antenna has been replaced with an aftermarket type that fully retracts, facilitating easier installation of a car cover. The whole drivetrain is quite dry; I’d say it’s pretty close to leak free. In preparation for its new owner, our shop has drained the gas tank for inspection (it was like new inside), serviced both carburetors, replaced the harmonic balancer, and given the car a good once over inspection. Its ready to drive anywhere. The car comes with an indoor car cover, both carpet and rubber type floor mats, a travel kit (new fuel pump, oil switch, fan belt, distributor cap, and original point set up), and quite a folder of literature including the factory owners, top, accessory, parts catalogue and shop manuals; Corsa technical guide, several aftermarket repair manuals, original sales literature, original sales receipt, original protect-o-plate, receipts, pictures, and a detailed service record (since 1981). If you have been looking for a Corvair convertible, you know there’s a whole bunch of project cars out there, as well as plenty of half –ass ‘restorations’ and cars that look ok but wouldn’t make it to the edge of town. This is a good, honest, solid car in a desirable color that runs and drives great, with good history and service. Not a concours winner, but sure to be a favorite at the local cruise night. And it’s turn key. You are welcome to come by our shop and insect and test drive this car with appointment during our regular shop hours of 9am/5pm. Who are we? WWW.VAIRSHOP.COM We are located 35 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, just off of I-80 and I-57. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car, or provide pictures of any area not already shown. For out of town buyers, I will also be happy to work with your transporter of choice to get the car properly loaded for transport.
