Thanks 2010 Mazda3 Power: 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder, 148 horsepower Mileage estimate: 25-33 mpg Price: $15,295 to $23,195 Standard features include: antilock disc brakes with brake assist; stability and traction control; 60/40 fold-down rear seatback; tilt-and-telescoping steering column; power windows and mirrors; and a four-speaker stereo with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and steering-wheel controls; halogen headlights; 24-hour roadside assistance By Jeffrey Weidel After five years of rave reviews, a redesign was scheduled for the 2010 Mazda 3. There’s no doubt Mazda engineers approached this project with extreme care considering the popular compact vehicle is responsible for roughly one-third of the company’s world-wide sales. No need for admirers of the Mazda 3 to worry, the redesign went fine. The Japanese automaker made some nice improvements to an already great product, most notably by making the ride more stable and adding some smart interior changes. The front-wheel drive Mazda 3, which comes in three trims and is offered as a sedan or four-door hatchback, remains an attractive, sporty car that gets excellent gas mileage (25-33 mpg). Another major plus remains its reasonable price, ranging from $15,295 to just over $23,000 for the Sport model with all the bells and whistles. Some Mazda 3 enthusiast may balk at the exterior changes, which I personally found to be very appealing. The front features a sizable opening in the lower bumper that has been referred to as possessing a “sinister smile.” It’s actually no gimmick, just a design that makes the vehicle more aerodynamic, the end result providing a bump in gas mileage while wind noise is reduced. 2010 Mazda3 Interior There’s no argument concerning a revamped interior that includes upgraded materials. The overall design is visibly more appealing and functional as well. Both climate controls and audio system can be quickly mastered. The only drawback is an optional Navigational screen that is small and tough to read at times. A minor change in the platform has the Mazda 3 providing an even better ride. That’s saying something, considering the previous version offered admirable road manners. The Mazda 3 continues to confidently grip the road on sharp turns, is pleasant in commute mode, and has enough zip to do well in freeway situations. The base model is a zippy, 5-speed manual transmission with a 2.0-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower that one swears has more horses at its disposal than the listed figure. The upgraded engine is a larger 4-cylinder that’s 2.5 liters with a robust 167 horsepower. Unfortunately, what has not changed is the one major knock against the Mazda 3 – interior space. It seats five overall, but don’t be one of the three people stuck in the backseat, unless of course two of them are small children. Both leg and headroom are problematic in front and back. One more issue concerning space – the trunk is on the small side as well.
