Vehicle Detail
With some reluctance I am putting my 1972 BMW 2002tii for sale. I have enjoyed the car but I am running out of car space. My father purchased a brand new 1973 BMW 2002tii while I was still in college. The car was silver with blue interior, factory sunroof and Behr AC. After 3 years he was ready to move to something different and the car became mine. I was fresh out of college and with a new job, and this car was everything I could every desire in a vehicle! It was fast, handled extremely well, great visibility …. and so much better than the 1969 VW Beetle it was replacing. Fast forward many years and my interest in cars never went away. I became a collector of Jaguars and Maseratis, but I never forgot that BMW 2002tii. I always wondered if driving it today would still feel the same as so many years ago. Four years ago I decided to find a tii that resembled the one I had. The car had to be the tii versionwith its mechanical fuel injection. It also had to have the attractive round taillights. This limits the search to 1972 and 1973 models. It had to the have the sunroof since I used it a lot; and the Behr AC would be nice. More importantly I did not want a car that had be modified with spoilers, bumper delete and a lot of “boy racer” options. Finding such a car was a bit harder than I had anticipated until this one came along. I really like the unusual shade of blue, called Baikal. The color is named after a lake in Russia. The blue interior is the same color and texture as the car I had. The car has the sunroof and the Behr AC. Best of all it was owned once by a BMW mechanic in California and was well sorted out. There are a few non-stock things which I did not find offensive. The wheels are from a later car; most likely a 320i. It has a aftermarket radio with an ipod/iphone plug. The gearbox was updated to a 5 speed, which is nice. It has a nice Nardi wooden steering wheel and the original wheel comes with the car. I added a MSD ignition since I find it helps with reliability and I like driving my cars. I also added coco mats since my car had them ... it was a 1970's thing! The car is nice but it is not perfect. There is a small repair on the driver’s seat (see photo). There are three areas that have some rust bubbles; one area on the trunk lid, the left rear wheel arch and the front left corner (see photos). They were there when I purchased the car and have not changed during my ownership. The rest of the car is very solid. I have not detected any prior collision and metal repairs. The doors, rockers, floors and undercarriage are straight and rust free. It appears the car spent most of it life in California, which would explain the excellent body. Mechanically the car starts and runs very good. Odometer reads 4,122 but I do not know if that means 104,122 or if the odometer was replaced at some time. New springs plus Bilstein shocks were installed front and rear in 2006. Tie rods were also replaced that year. Gearbox shifts smoothly, AC blows cold, all the gauges work, even the clock works. Perhaps I have been very lucky but this car has been very reliable. I can honestly say driving a tii after so many years brought back many fond memories. These car were fantastic in their days and even today they are a joy to drive. Car comes with original documentation, including the owner’s manual in its pouch plus the Behr AC manual and warrantee information. Also included is the tool kit in like new condition. I have enjoyed this BMW and it is time for it to find a good home. Please understand that the car is not perfect, so take the time to come and check it out for yourself.
