Vehicle Detail

Original, Numbers Matching Aztec Bronze 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 360-Horsepower / Four Speed / 3.31:1 Positraction "TOP SPEED" Convertible Rare And Fully Restored Matching Numbers 13867 SS396 VIN 138676K129459 Convertible Sold With Original Sales Paperwork, Protect-O-Plate, And Factory Wheels/Covers Up for sale is a 1966 Chevy Chevelle SS396 Convertible -- just one of a scant number known to have been equipped with a hi-po 396-ci V8 (in this case, the L34 360-hp/415-lb-ft-torque engine), M20 4spd transmission and 3.31:1 Posi rear, giving it the highest factory top speed of all Chevelle droptops: 131 mph at redline. Just 430 3.31:1 ratio rears and an additional 33 3.07:1 ratios went into six-figures of total 1966 Chevelle and El Camino production, but according to information aggregated from Chevelle experts, we've found this is one of maybe four or five documented hi-po SS396/4spd/3.31 Convertibles still in existence. Given GM's records at the time, it is impossible to say exactly how many were made or still exist with these options, but suffice it to say that the "Top Speed" combination is rarer than a sunburned bat. Built in the first week of December, 1965 with the following options and itemized cost from original sales receipt: Paint Color: MM Aztec Bronze Interior: 787 Medium Bronze ($79.00) L34 - High Performance Turbo Jet 396 cubic inch V8 360hp ($105.35) M20- 4 speed transmission ($105.35) G94- 3.31:1 rear end ratio (n/c) G90- Positraction ($36.90) C06- Power Convertible Top ($52.70) N96- Mag Style Wheel Covers ($73.50) A51- Bucket Seats ($110.60) D55- Console ($47.40) A49- Deluxe Seat Belts ($10.55) A02- Tinted Windshield ($19.50) AM Radio Dealer Installed per recipt ($57.40) This car was purchased new by Lynn Long of Stronghurst, IL on 12/11/1965 from Knutstrom Chevrolet Sales, Stronghurst, IL for a total of $3869.34. Four months later, after his new Corvette arrived, he sold the car to his brother, Lyle, who owned it until 2000. According to Lyle in emails on 4/25/2011: "It was my favorite car of all time with tons of memories...it would absolutely fly on top end. A police officer friend was telling me how fast their new Plymouth police cars were so we went out to find out. The 66 ended his bragging." Vehicle Condition This SS396 received a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration in 2000. The current owner bought it in 2006 and has lovingly cared for it and has kept it in a heated garage. It has been driven from time-to-time to keep the car in top running condition. It drives and shows nicely and would be considered by experts a 1- or strong 2+ due to actually seeing time on the road since restoration. While the car originally had a tan top, it was restored with a black top to suit personal preference. The transmission was also replaced early in its life with a correct ratio M20 but with a later date coded case. Car comes with its original date coded steel wheels and mag-style wheel covers (originals, not reproductions) with Redline bias ply tires for shows, as well as the original sales invoice, loan papers, Protect-O-Plate still attached to the warranty book, convertible user's guide, user manual and ultra-rare original SS396 dealer postcard. Terms and Conditions Car is located in Olympia, WA and sold with no warranties or guarantees of any type, either expressed or implied. Since this is a no-reserve auction, a bid is a contract to buy, so ask all questions prior to bidding by contacting sc@apexstrategy.com or calling three/six/zero...402/Six/Four/87 (Sorry, trying to ensure no telemarketers) between 9am and 8pm West Coast time. While I have done my best to represent the car fairly (and based on my perfect feedback, I pride myself on accuracy), subjective opinions about classic cars means that the description is not a substitute for an in-person pre-purchase inspection. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. Payment in full due within 30 days of auction close. The car will not be released until all funds have cleared. Top up photos: Trunk with original spare, jack, mat, and Positraction warning sticker: Special Order Bronze Interior with knee-knocker tach, working clock, console, and original four-speed shifter handle. Tags, Plates and Numbers: How many SS396 360hp 4spd Convertibles still have the original sales reciept, Protec-O-Plate, financing papers, owners manuals, and SS396 dealer postcard?
