Vehicle Detail
I am selling my 1959 Mercedes with a heavy heart... I bought the car from the original owner in 2009 with the goal of restoring it to the beauty it is. The car was stored in a dry barn in PA since 1979. I had rebuilt the carbs, redone all brakes completely. The car started in every kind of weather and I always started it regularly. I could let it run for as long as wanted and never even attempted to over heat. The car has all original mileage. I just drove it up and down the street. It ran great and was a lot of fun...until it fell victim to our house fire. In November of 2010 our condo caught fire and burning parts of the building fell on the car. This caused an engine fire... I was contemplating back and forth of what to do with the car but this kind of restoration is too much for me to handle right now. I am still trying to sort out the aftermath of the house fire. That is why I am putting it up for sale... THE CURRENT CONDITION This car is ready for a total restoration. I would think that the engine could be rebuilt with little effort as it ran great before the fire. All # matching and one owner history with original 1959 title makes this a worthwhile project. All moveable parts in the engine area need to be redone/rebuilt/replaced. The car needs a paint job and the interior needs a good cleaning, interior wood reconditioning and a new upholstered sunroof with new lining. The windshield cracked during the fire but the rest of the glass is intact. Windows roll up and down. Doors close very easily and the spacing between all the doors is still great. The car is a rollable chassis. I welded all necessary spots back in early 2010 and they are still solid. As you can see the car and be jacked up in all original jack receivers. No creaking or crumbling noises. There was not much that needed to be welded but it was done with great care. No Bondo on this car. After the welding everything was nicely coated with POR-15 with the proper preparation to make it last. The wood is not cracked anywhere besides a small little piece left of the steering wheel. The original WEBASTO sunroof opens and closes nicely. The leather interior could still be cleaned up. It does not have any rips, but cracks here and there. The door panels are still in good shape and could clean up nicely. The interior smells like smoke but in my after fire experience I can say that "simple green" cleaner really does a great job cleaning things up. BUT THERE IS A DEFINITIVE SMOKE SMELL INSIDE. I think it goes without saying when looking at the pictures, nevertheless I wanted to bring it up again. The car has a brand new gas tank that has lifetime warranty. The gas tank was never connected and is still in unused condition. I paid $500 to have it rebuilt. CAR HISTORYThe original owner, Mr. Horne, was stationed in Germany after serving in the Korea war in 1958. In 1959 he bought the Mercedes in Germany and had it shipped to his home in Quakertown, PA. There it was last registered in 1978, therefore the low mileage. I bought it from him in 2009. I am from Germany myself and just love this car, especially the WEBASTO sunroof, which is very rare. This special feature was only not often ordered since it almost doubled the price compared to the same car without the roof. I just would like this car go to a nice home and therefore I am starting it at a $900 NO RESERVE bid. The metal in this car is worth more than that. I have seen restored ones in Germany sell for $40000... Please bid only if you are serious. The car needs total restoration, but has a good base for it. It is to be picked up with a flat bed or trailer. Please do not ask me if I accept less then $900. I will not. I have offers for $900 for the combined value of metal and some parts on the car, but I think it is worth more. Bidding constitutes a binding contract. Inspections are welcome BEFORE the auction closes. IF YOU BID WITHOUT INSPECTING - YOU BUY ANYWAY!The reason for this comment is that someone had just bid on the car my mother in law was selling on ebay and he did not fulfill his contract :-(Please, please ask before the auction ends. I will tell you all I know. I don't quite know what else I could say about it but if you have questions you can email or call me under 203-556-6387. I will be happy to help you however I can. Obviously there is nothing I want to hide and my 100% feedback is something I want to keep. I might be able to assist with shipping to Germany/Europe but that depends on how quick the buyer completes the transaction. Thanks for looking. Lukas Hi again I went to check on the car again today and took a few more pictures of it. I also checked the engine oil since I had changed it not long before the fire. It was still very clean and had absolutely no coolant in it. The car front looks rusty and the trunk as well, but this is just surface. I would recommend to replace the passenger side front fender since it had a dent in it when I bought it, but the other metal parts appear to be salvageable if you don't wait until winter.
