Vehicle Detail
I am selling this car on behalf of a family friend whose husband passed away several years ago. She and her husband purchased the car in the mid 1970s in California, spent some time in Ohio, some time in Alabama, then brought to Tennessee. The car was last licensed in 1991 in Alabama, now has a Tennessee Title. The car has not been run in probably 20 years. The story is the car was parked due to an electrical problem. Stored in a barn and outside. Still has belts, hoses, antifreeze, oil as when parked. We rotated the engine slightly with the starter, but have not attempted to start. Some lights, electrical accessories work, some don’t. There are lots of typical '70s modifications, cassette deck, air horns, fog lights, etc. Car is a trendy green metallic original color #46, hardtop with tan interior. If anything appears shiny in the pictures, it probably isn't in person. Car has original bucket seats, console. 6.5 Litre Pontiac 400 engine, essentially original components. Two barrel carburetor, single exhaust. M40 Three Speed Automatic Transmission Rear axle is probably 3.08 or might be 2.73 or 3.23, don’t know if limited slip or not. Rear air shocks seem to work. Car has some rust, but not excessive for its age. Surface rust on hood and front fender tops due to weather exposure. Driver size fender has rust through in rocker area behind front wheel. Rear quarter panels have rust through the very bottom. Rust appears to be repairable, less rust than a northern car. Car will roll, brakes don’t work, but parking brake does. Tires will hold air for a day or so. Will be happy to e-mail pictures of details if requested. Car is sold as is. Mileage is a guess based on odometer reading. Car is listed with a reserve set at essentially the scrap metal value of the car. If you are a Grand Am person, here's your chance at a complete car. We would like for her to end up in the hands of someone who appreciates her, but If she doesn't meet the reserve, she is headed for the crusher. If you are only interested in specific parts from the car, list them in an e-mail, and if the car doesn't sell complete, we will consider removing and re-listing the individual parts and scrapping the rest of the car. Shipping from Estill Springs TN will be the responsibility of the purchaser. I will help load the car on your trailer and the title will be available at the time the car is picked up. Caveat: This is totally my opinion and what I think is OK might be your definition of awful, so if any questions, please feel free to ask for pictures, etc. I took a lot of them. Body condition: The car looks like it had some professional rust preventative effort as part of the dealer or aftermarket like Ziebart. I jacked the car up and inspected the bottom as best I could. The basic frame and body structure of the car is very solid. Rust holes found around wheel wells and rear quarter bottoms were all patch panel repair type. All I found on the frame was minor surface rust in a few places, other wise looks straight, solid and essentially original. The car has a frame mount trailer hitch that is pretty substantial. The body structure appears very solid, doors open/shut ok, style lines are straight. No obvious major previous damage. The only apparent paint work is on the driver door/rear quarter, and was either a very light repair or owner applied touchup paint. Both windows roll up/down fine, gaskets obviously shot. If one wanted to improve door operation, probably only a hinge/striker adjustment. Water was entering the car via door seals and trunk seals, and damp carpet in floor and trunk has resulted in surface rust on floor pans and trunk bottom. I went ahead and cut out the carpet and sound dampening stuff, did not find any rust through. If you want the DNA on the original carpet, some pieces are still under the console. Driver front pan has most surface rust followed by passenger front pan. Rear pans look ok. All floor pans look fine from underneath the car. The soft front nose has weathered away, but I believe we may have the nose emblems, have pictures. The hood has heavy surface rust, but no apparent holes, and is straight. Some rust in the battery box area, hard to tell the extent. Left front fender has parking lot swipe in marker light area and below, area behind LF wheel has rust hole about 1"x2" will need at least a patch panel. Windshield/back glass/louver areas appear to have very slight surface rust unless some is hidden underneath the moldings. The driver door bottom and rocker areas look ok. Had to clean out door drain holes with nail to drain some water in door. Some rust through at front of and also behind the left rear wheel opening in the left quarter panel, probably a patch panel job as well. Rust in the trunk appears to be surface rust due to a damp carpet. The right rear quarter panel has rust through on the very bottom, and a small rusted area in front of the right rear wheel. Both rust through areas on the bottom of the rear quarters are essentially below the visible line. The right rear door bottom and rockers look ok, also had to clean out door drain holes to let out water like left door. The lower right door trim molding is missing, but the right rocker panel molding is there. The right front fender has light rust behind the wheel well, can't tell if surface or some patch required behind the wheel molding. Small golf ball size dent in lower front of right fender. The hub caps look original. No spare or jack, but might have original jack handle. If someone is interested in the original jack, send me a picture and we'll see if the jack might be in my friend's garage. I also have pictures of the radiator cap off showing the antifreeze and dipsticks from the engine and trans. Please e-mail for additional pictures. Thank you all for your interest.
