Vehicle Detail
1987 BMW R80RT Thank you for viewing my auction for a 1987 BMW R80RT with 15,676 miles. Several years ago, I impulsively purchased this bike in an effort to relive my younger days. My wife and I thought it would be great fun to get back in the saddle again as we did in our 30s. Twenty five years later we’ve come to realize that we’ve gotten a little soft around the edges and now prefer to put the top down on our sports car instead of riding the bike. Consequently, we’ve only put about 250 miles on the bike in the last 3 years. Rather than let it sit, it is time for someone else to enjoy this wonderful machine. The bike is in overall very good condition. I have never laid it down and it appears that no one else has either. The seat is in great condition with no tears or defects, the chrome looks good although the pipes are discolored near the cylinders, and the paint on the fairing / tank / side covers / rear compartment are all excellent. During recent maintenance, I wiped very minor oil seepage from a few places but the bike has no oil leaks to speak of. Locks for the bags and fairing storage pockets work but the gas cap lock can be finicky. A few of the smaller steel components have surface rust but overall, the bike’s cosmetics are excellent. As is common with this bike, the clock does not work. All other features (lights, directionals, horn, etc) work as new. All vehicles registered in Maine (including motorcycles) must be inspected annually. When I acquired the bike, my local BMW shop thoroughly inspected the bike for both the state inspection and for my peace of mind. In addition to replacing some of the cables and the fuel lines for the inspection, I also had them rebuild the carburetors, replace the fuel filters, adjust the valves, and tune it. Since then, I have changed all oils in the drivetrain with the appropriate weight synthetic oil. The fork oil has not been changed but given the meticulous nature of the previous owner, I would guess that it has been replaced at some time in its history. While cleaning the bike this spring, I media blasted the top engine cover and the valve covers, and repainted them. The tires are Metzler ( ME 33 front, ME 88 rear) and have plenty of tread. However, very close examination revealed the smallest of age related cracks beginning to form. The bike’s state inspection is currently expired but when it was last done, the bike shop had no issue with the condition of the tires. I have always kept the bike storage in my garage and in fact, I have never ridden it in the rain. During the winter, the fuel has always been treated with Stabil blue to protect against the effects of the gasohol and the battery has been kept on a battery tender. Even the tool kit is brand new and complete as the previous owner went out and purchased a brand new one. All in all, this bike is barely broken in and should provide someone with many years of riding pleasure. Included with the sale will be a Clymers repair manual, the original owners manual, and a small collection of used parts. Questions (before the end of the auction) are welcome and if you are in the area, feel free to inspect the bike. As the insurance is not up to date, I will not let the bike off my property for a test ride unless a substantial deposit is paid. The state of Maine does not issue a title for vehicles of this age but instead requires that the registration be signed over to the buyer along with a bill of sale. As each state has different licensing requirements, your state will be able to reference Maine’s laws and you will be able to license the bike in your home state with the Maine required documentation. There is no lien on this bike. The buyer will be responsible for all cost associated with transporting the bike, whether through a commercial carrier or themselves. Payment must be made in full before ownership of the bike will be transferred to the buyer. I will accept cash before or at the time of picking up the bike, or a bank check in advance which has had time to clear my bank before picking up the bike. The bike is located in the Portland, Maine area and I might be willing to transport it a short distance (up to 60 miles) on my trailer for the cost of fuel for my truck with trailer (figure 18 mpg). This option must be discussed before the end of the auction and if agreed to, payment for fuel will be required before I leave on any journey. The bottom line is I believe that communication between the buyer and seller is key to a pleasant financial exchange and I am happy to listen to your suggestions. And finally, payment for the bike as well as picking it up must be made in a timely manner. I would like to have a nonrefundable deposit of $200 paid within a few days (PayPal will be acceptable for the deposit only) if the winner bidding does not plan to pick up the bike within 1 week. I have room to store it for up to 30 days but the buyer stores it at my home at their own risk as it is presently uninsured. Thanks, Tony On Apr-19-11 at 18:25:05 PDT, seller added the following information:I have been asked whether there is a defect in the fairing paint as there seems to be mark on the right side as seen in photo 3. The white colored "mark" in the photo must be a reflection as there are no scratches other than the 2 small ones on the front fender shown in the next to last photo.
