You spot a car you always liked...and this one is in terrific shape. You give the driver a thumbs up as he pulls away, and you imagine what it would be like to have a car like that, one that you've always admired, in your own garage: An original, a survivor, a car that hasn't been restored but, instead, kept in top-notch shape by its original owner. And one that is ready to be driven. Sitting behind the big door at Benchmark Classics in Middleton, Wisconsin is one of the most popular performance cars of its day, a 1985 Toyota Celica Supra. An ex-military officer bought this beauty brand-new in 1985 and kept it in impeccable condition for a quarter of a century. After all that time, it has been driven less than an average of 3000 miles a year, and NEVER in winter! This Supra is a real find, just as so many have come to expect from Benchmark Classics. Today, Supras are usually remembered for the serious high performance Mark IV models of the 90s. But the original Supras were actually higher performance, six-cylinder versions of the Toyota Celica. These "Celica Supras" (as they were officially known until the 1986 model) were developed to give Toyota a competitor to the very popular Datsun (now Nissan, of course) Z car. The first of these, often referred to as the Mark I, came out in 1978, and looked just like a Celica with a longer hood. That hood was stretched to make room for the two litre straight six that Toyota had developed for its legendary 2000GT. In 1981, a new Mark II Celica Supra was introduced, with styling all its own. By the time that our ex-Military officer had put down his money at Bredeman Toyota in suburban Chicago, this little Japanese rocket had grown to become a pretty advanced piece of machinery, with the twin-cam Toyota six now stretched to 2.8 litres, putting power through a typically smooth shifting Toyota 5-speed. When you read the reviews of Supras over the years, you'll find one reviewer after another comment on the great stopping power of the Supra's brakes. In '85 they were already 4 wheel vented power discs, and they'll still haul you down today. This 80's survivor has its original black paint (wait until you see it!), over a blue/gray textured interior. The condition of the car is generally super throughout, especially when you remember that this car is in original condition. It has instantly-identifiable Supra wheels, shod with recent, original equipment, Dunlops. And every major component of the AC has been replaced. This one is ready to go. The owner describes this '85 Toyota as, "Right out of the wrapper" and it would be hard to disagree.
