Vehicle Detail
1986 Porsche 944 Turbo. Guards Red (Indisch Rot) with black interior. 86,xxx miles. VIN WPOAAO953GN155297. Built April 1986. I’m the third owner of this classic car. I purchased it in December 2001 with 56,000 miles from a 55-year old gentleman in Florida who had owned it 10 years, having purchased it from the original owner in 1990 with 45,000 miles. I’ve driven it on average just under 3,000 miles a year, so it’s gotten exercise. If you’re looking for a 944 Turbo, then you want this car because: 1. It has the European rear bumper, which I brought back from Germany when I lived there. It makes the car look like it is supposed to. It also has Hella H4 headlamps and the European driving/fog lamp assembly. With the exception of side repeaters (which I have, but not installed), the vehicle looks Euro-spec from the outside. 2. I’ve installed factory 993 Cup 2 wheels, 7 and 9 x 17”, with Dunlop SP Sport 225/45 and 255/40 tires, with H&R spacers (original 16” phone dials also included). 3. This car has the Big Black 928 GTS front brakes with 993 Twin Turbo rotors and a 5/33 brake bias valve. I’ve also added the 968 cooling ducts since the 944 Turbo ducts were omitted with the suspension upgrade below. 4. I’ve installed the 968 Club Sport steering wheel, Autothority short-shift linkage, and aluminum pedal covers to improve the driver points of contact with the vehicle. They are all improvements to the stock vehicle. It also has the Autothority Stage 2 chips (original chips are included as well). 5. I’ve installed a 968 Turbo RS suspension using Koni dampers and Hypercoil front and Weltmeister rear springs and Porsche M030 antiroll bars and other factory components. I lived in Germany for three years just before I bought the car, and I was in the position to have access to Weissach engineers (my dentist’s dad was on the Porsche board of management) and their trove of knowledge of all things 944/968. Obtaining the setup data for the 968 Turbo RS, including damping and spring rates, I was able to duplicate this suspension using parts readily available (almost all the Turbo RS pieces are no longer available). This setup uses Koni single-adjustable Sport (“yellow”) strut inserts and dampers, with the struts being modified to accept coil over racing springs. I use Hypercoil springs in the front and Weltmeister torsion bars in the rear to match the 968 Turbo RS spring and damper rates. Then I added Porsche M030 front and rear antiroll bars and the Porsche adjustable caster block from the 968 to allow full adjustability of the suspension. Aligning it to the 968 TRS specifications results in a car that is exceptionally well balanced while only marginally stiffer on the street. All this might sound like a lot, but the fact is, early in Porsche’s history they would introduce a vehicle and almost immediately make changes to it as the found where improvements were needed. Today, vehicles are modified incrementally and introduced as new model year versions. But Porsche had started with the 1986 944 Turbo and then made changes to improve things like the old days, I’d like to think my modifications are what Porsche would have come up with — a 944 Turbo with the suspension and braking system of the final and superlative vehicle in the series, the 968 Turbo RS. In fact, most of these modifications are superior to the 944 Turbo.Porsche experts agree. This car was appraised in April 2007 by Dennis David Antique Automobile Appraisals. He wrote, “The vehicle has been altered from its original ‘as delivered’ condition, but the modifications have been made with Porsche authorized factory upgrade parts which have increased the car’s performance significantly. The car is currently registered for road use, but is also set up for high performance driving. The overall condition of the body is excellent. The vehicle shows no evidence of having been involved in any major or catastrophic collisions, and does not appear to have been completely repainted. The floor and underpan appear to be in good condition with no rust or evidence of major repairs or weld seams.” (He’s right, including that there’s never been an accident, at least when I owned the car, and there’s no rust whatsoever). “Overall, this 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo is an interesting example of this model of Porsche’s performance heritage. Although not in factory stock and original condition, it is a car that has been vastly improved for high performance driving. These alterations, however, did not occur without a pre-planned design for the car. Indeed, it is a well-executed and well thought out plan that has created a car of excellent reliability and performance.” Its condition is very good (8/10). Exterior shows minor chips but nothing unusual. No rust whatsoever. Stone chip in on windshield in passenger’s line of sight, repaired 2004 and stable since. Dash has one minor crack 1 cm long behind instrument pod. A few slight dings that couldn’t be taken out paintlessly. Interior is extremely clean. Mechanically well-taken care of. All the electrics work as they should. No issues at present except the oil drips typical with these cars. All service records since 2001. Recent service includes cat back exhaust (Ansa), A-arms (for new ball joints). Other major service includes: Dunlop tires (Aug 2010 / 83,300), Ball joints/remanufactured A-arms (Sep 2009 / 82,000 miles), Air conditioning conversion to CFC 134 (Jul 2009/81,100 miles); blows cold, Timing belt, water pump, balance shaft seals in (Apr 2007 / 76,000 miles), Clutch master & slave cylinders in (Aug 2005 / 73,500 miles), Clutch (Sep 2003, 68,500 miles), 60,000 mile service, CV joints, motor mounts in (Jan 2003 / 60,000 miles). The car has the following options: catalytic converter, Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 radio (since replaced with Nakamichi CD-35 AM/FM/CD), 40% limited slip differential, central locking, side moldings, rear window wiper, cruise control, alarm system, and removable sunroof. These relate to option codes CO2, 158, 220, 341, 418, 425, 454, 533, and 650 on the production sticker in the trunk. Other standard equipment includes power driver’s seat, air conditioning, power steering, power side mirrors and windows, rear defroster, central locking, power hatch release. It also has headlamp washers (I guess they were standard in 1986). It didn’t have the tool kit when I bought it, but the original space saver spare, jack, and compressor are present. I also have the luggage compartment privacy cover and the bag for the sunroof. When I bought it I also bought factory carpet floor mats and a car cover. It also has a clear bra on the nose and leading edges of the wing mirrors.REGARDING SHIPPING: I can work with you regarding delivery under certain circumstances.
