Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is my exceptional 1981 Honda CB900C Custom motorcycle. It currently has 42,600 miles on it and is in amazing mechanical condition, there isn't much I haven't done, touched, polished, or made better. This will be a long description, as I want everyone to be well informed. No guessing, no surprises, no 2 sentence description and 2 grainy pictures. I also have a link to many other pictures from every concievable angle. I will also answer any questions you may have with one exception....IF YOU ASK A QUESTION that is clearly answered in the listing or pictures, I will ignore it!!! I took the time to write it and take over 100 pictures, please take the time to read and view them. Also, my reserve is private, don't ask how much it is. I have a clear title, with no liens, in my name ready for the new owner if my reserve is met. I will also be happy to show it to anyone during the listing, and I can certainly store it for you for up to 30 days. It stays in my airplane hangar when not in use, so that's not a problem. This is my 4th and probably not last CB900. I really enjoy putting them back on the road. I have no real "need" to sell it, other than life has been busy, I don't ride it enough, and I have another vintage Honda that I don't ride enough either, so I've decided to offer the 900 here. I envisioned many long trips on this one, and I maintained, upgraded, and spent a lot of money to make sure she was good to go on a moments notice, but I just don't have time. I wouldn't hesitate to ride this across town or across the country. Mechanically, I don't know how to make one better. I hope it gets a good home and gets ridden more, I did the hard part and spent the money/time, get on it and go. 150 pictures available for viewing at: http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/hh307/PT13Pilot/1981%20CB900C%20For%20Sale/ More pictures of engine work: http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/hh307/PT13Pilot/1981%20CB900C%20For%20Sale/Engine%20Repair/ If you don't know, the 900 customs were made in the 80, 81, and 82 model year. They are 900CC, 82 HP, DOHC 4 cylinder, with 2 speed gear box with 2 shifters for a total of 10 speeds. Shaft drive. This one is is equipped with a Vetter Windjammer IV fairing complete with matching lowers and Hondaline sadlebags, rack, and back rest, and Hondaline engine case savers with foot rests. What's Included: The motorcycle as pictured/described, clear title, some extra parts/gaskets listed below, my maintenance folder with all reciepts, origional owners manual, extra keys, OEM Honda printed maintenance manual, complete origional tool kit with spare spark plugs, anything else I have for it when you come to get it. Terms of sale: $500 Deposit due within 48 hours of winning bid. Balance due within 7 days, cash in person, or certified payment for the balance. Delivery may be available in the back of my truck for gas money/expenses depending on my work schedule. Or I'd be happy to help you load it, or help with a shipping company, but that's up to you. Warranty: No warranty. Other than I guaranty it is exactly as listed here. History: I bought this bike 5/2008 with 35,469 miles. And in nearly 3 years I've only put 7000 miles on it. I have no idea if I'm the 2nd or 22nd owner, never looked it up. In the last 3 years I've set out to create an exceptionally well maintained motorcycle, with some significant upgrades and modernization to make this bike even better than origional. Here is a breakdown. One thing I want to get out of the way first!!! The speedometer has been changed, by me. In the early 80's there was a stupid law that all vehicles had to have 85 MPH max speedometers. There is 1 year of goldwing speedometers that's a direct fit in looks and function that reads to 150. I found one. Restored it, replaced the glass that was broken, and adjusted the mileage to exactly match the origional. The origional speedometer is also included. I took pictures with date stamps the day I swapped them to keep continuity of mileage. You'll find pictures of this in my maintenance logbook and my photobucket pictures. If this bothers you, then don't bid. Frame: 99% rust free, most nicks and chips have been touched up. Tires: Dunlop Elite 3 matched front and rear. About the best you can get, they are rated for Goldwings. They have 2800 miles on them and show almost no wear. They are self balancing, as they are equipped with Dyna Beads. Ceramic beads that self balance as they rotate. Brakes/wheels: Front master cylinder rebuilt with new seals, new cup, and new cover. Front brake cylinders rebuilt with new seals. New brake pads. Front brake lines replaced with new Galfer 3 line stainless brake lines. Front wheel has new All Balls wheel bearings and dust covers. Rear brake master and wheel cylinder cleaned/flushed, new rear brake pads. Front Forks: Rebuilt this week with new slider bushings, OEM Honda seals, backup rings, dust seals, and 20 weight fork oil. Stock springs replaced with Progressive springs and spacers last year. All new o-rings in air lines. New drain bolts and gaskets. Slider tubes are rust and pitting free. Clear coat removed and forks lightly polished. New Superbrace fork brace for better handling. Rear suspension/final drive: Synthetic oil in final drive and 2 speed gear box. Stock shocks replaced with new Progressive adjustable 412 series heavy duty coil over shocks (the stock air shocks were too soft for me when loaded). Engine: Runs 100% and is leak free. I found a cracked cam chain tensioner in 2008 while doing a valve shim adjustment. I dropped the engine, removed the head and measured everything. Everything from the bore, pistons, rings, to valve stem diameter and valve spring length measured top of NEW specs. I replaced both tensioners with new Honda parts, flex honed/deglazed the bores, new standard rings, cleaned and hand lapped all valves, installed new Viton valve stem seals and reassembled with new gaskets. Adjusted valves, new valve cover gasket, tach drive gasket, tach garlock seal, hold down seals, new cam chain adjuster bolt, nut, and seal. New oil pump gasket, shifter seal, and oil pan gasket. All new gaskets all around, new heavy duty clutch springs. Engine runs great, no leaks, uses no oil, doesn't smoke, and all cylinders are 170 PSI like they are supposed to be. Smooth and quiet. Many pictures of the engine repair at my photobucket site listed above. I also adjust my valves to the max on the loose side since they wear tight with wear. This was done less than 2000 miles ago, so they aren't due for quite a while. I also have a shim chart showing the size of shims installed, making your next adjustment a snap. I'm also including a box of 5 new valve cover gaskets. Also has a set of Hondaline case savers with foot rests, chrome is in good shape with no rust or pitting. Carburetors: Completely disassembled and cleaned. All new soft parts/gaskets, float needls, air cut off valves, and accelerator pump from Randakk's which are made of Viton which is impervious to modern gas, and much more heat resistant. New screws for float bowls, new stainless hex screws on carb rack. Carb tops polished. New carb to engine rubber intake pipes. New paper air filter element, and a stock type K&N filter is included. Removed factory trouble prone vacuum fuel shutoff and installed an inline filter between the petcock and carb inlet. http://www.randakks.com/DOHC%20Four%20Page.htm Sync'd and adjusted. Starts right up, not cold natured. Electrical: EVERY connection, switch, and ground cleaned and treated for future corrosion, I hate electrical gremlins. Everything works 100%. New main fuse installed and spare included. All glass fuses new. Battery is a Yuasa AGM sealed battery. It's almost 3 years old and still works like new. It has a plug for a trickle charger installed and accessible and hiden under the right side cover. Trickle charger included. Charging system: I had the stator and rotor rewound, installed a new regulator/rectifier, new A & B rotor brushes less than 1500 miles ago. Charges a full 14.8-15 volts at under 2000 RPM's. Lighting: New Silverstar Ultra headlight bulb. All other lighting is LED color matched to it's application. The turn signal bulbs and brake light bulbs are aluminum housing Luxeon bulbs, $25/ea and are brighter than incandecent during the day, and many times brighter at night. Electronic LED flasher installed. Ignition: New OEM style coils, plug wires, and NGK caps. NGK Iridium spark plugs installed. Exhaust: Factory 4 into 4 exhaust is in excellent shape. Chrome isn't perfect, but still shiny, with no rust or pitting. No bluing on the head pipes. Factory welds and H pipes cleaned and painted with 1200 degree silver paint like origional. The right pipes have some acid etching from a former leaking battery, not visible unless you crawl underneath, but it's there. Exhaust is solid, no loose baffles, and quiet. Gas Tank: Origional tank and paint. Emlems look great. The inside of the tank is clean, looks like new, and isn't coated with anything. I also installed a new complete assembly Honda petcock. It has be re-cleared at some point. The color on top of the tank is faded, but shiny. I still get compliments on it, but it isn't perfect. I had planned on having the tank and side covers painted to factory red or blue. Looks presentable, but isn't perfect. It has NO dents anywhere. Clutch: I assume it has origional clutch plates. I installed a set of heavy duty springs and adjusted. Doesn't slip even under WOT. Removed clear coat on cover and lightly polished. Seat: Origional replaced with a brand new Saddleman King/queen seat, still looks new. Fairing: Vetter Windjammer IV, appears to be dealer installed, no chips on the front of the gas tank like it's ever been riden "naked". It's in good shape with shiny paint. I installed new wiring, a voltmeter in the left side, electric oil pressure gauge in the right side, and in the right pocket cover is a set of 3 Honda gauges including clock, air temperature, and altimeter. All of these gauges work great and are LED back lit. Controled from 2 switches on the left side. Also installed a double power socket. Use one for your GPS like I did, and the other to charge your cell phone. All properly wired and fuse protected. The windshield and attach hardware are new and light smoke tint. I also have a new tall clear windshield with the snap vents that's included. Also installed was a new Sony CD player AM/FM stereo with AUX in port, new Polk Audio 4" speaker (water proof), and new antenna in a Cyclesound fairing. Works great and you can hear it at highway speeds with an open helmet. Also I installed a RAM ball mount on top for a GPS. I used my Garmin for navigation and the MP3 player run through the stereo with a patch cable. My GPS is not included. What else do you need? Also included are matched lowers and new and correct mounting hardware, takes 10 minutes to put them on. Saddlebags/backrest: Factory option Hondaline bags that come off easily and can be carries like briefcases with a turn of a key. Great shape, even the straps and elastic inside are still good. A few weather cracks in the rubber gasket, but still water tight. All locks work and I have keys for everything. The backrest and rack are also Hondaline. Chrome is in great shape. Not perfect but shiny with no rust or pitting. Bag on the back of the back rest has some wear but the zipper still works. Also has a vista cruise throttle lock/cruise control. And chrome speedometer and tach gauge covers. Stainless hex screws on engine covers. I'm probably forgetting some minor things, but you get the point, I went nuts on the thing and enjoyed every minute of it. Anything I didn't mention here is in my maintenance logbook. I'm an aircraft mechanic and all my vehicles have well documented logbooks. If I did something, it's there, written down with date and mileage, and all reciepts. Also some info on the bike, Vetter fairing manuals, and info on mods I've done. I hope it gets a worthy home. If you're looking for a vintage Honda that needs nothing, here's your chance. You'll be hard pressed to find one better maintained. I have keys for everything, and spares for most. I also have some spares, like oil filters, valve cover gaskets, and a bunch of Vetter fairing extras I'll include. And little things like a dust cover for the bike, cargo net for the rack. Extra throttle cables, choke cable, clutch cable, etc. Update: Changed oil and filter 3/29/2011 with Castrol 4T 20W50 and Hi-Flo filter. Adjusted cam chains.
