Vehicle Detail
I am selling a dark blue w/ tan 1988 Mercedes 560SL Roadster convertible. This car has a smooth running V8 in it that has lots of power. It has 109k verified original miles on it! This car has the soft top and the optional hard top. The tan soft top was replaced and new tires were put on a year ago and the optional rear seat was added a few months ago. The car also has a brand new battery. I bought this car two years ago as a small restoration project, but need to get something that has a full rear seat that my 3yr old son’s car seat will fit in. I bought the car from a large dealer in Washington, DC who took the car in on a trade. I an the third owner and the car has spent most of it's life in Florida. The dealer reported that the front driver's side fender had been replaced about 15 years ago due to a small bump up in a grocery store parking lot and that the front tip of the hood had been repainted the same year due the being scratched bad when the owner hit a guy on a bike. This car runs great, as I took it on a 7-hour roundtrip drive through the mountains with the top down a few weeks ago when it was warm. I had it checked out mechanically when I got it two years ago, and everything checked out great. I have driven it at least once every few months since then with no issues. If it sits in my garage during the winter for more than a few months, it has dripped a small amount of transmission fluid. I was told this was from the seals contracting during the extreme cold months. If I drive it or start it up for a few minutes at least once a month during the winter, there are no small drips. Also, while driving the car in the mountains a few weeks ago, there was an issue with the heat fan. A few minutes after turning the heat on at night, there was a pop sound that came from behind the dash. The heat continued to work, but the fan did not blow it out. I have not had it checked out, but it could be as simple as a blown fuse or relay. The same is with the A/C. You can feel the cold air, but it is not blowing out. This car’s issues are mostly cosmetic. The paint looks good from a distance, but has many light scratches and small dings throughout. The interior needs work as well. The front seats and the armrest are dried, split and cracked pretty bad, as you would expect from a car of this age. As stated before, the rear seats are new with new safety belts. I have tried to describe all of the flaws that this car has to the best of my knowledge, as I know there are some sellers that do not fully disclose the condition of older cars on here. This car could be completely restored to a classic beauty for a small amount, or could be driven as-is if wanted if you are ok with minor issues and visual imperfections. It is an awesome car to take out on a Sunday drive with the top down and let the V8 roar. If this were purchased with the intention of being a daily driver, I would strongly recommend that the winning bidder get it checked out mechanically as I did when I got it a few years ago. I wish I could keep it, but as stated before, we need to get something with a larger rear seat. The car can be picked up in person or I can help with shipping if needed. The cars runs good, so I would be willing to pick up some at PTI airport in Greensboro so that they could drive it home.
