Bobby Unser, A.J. Foyt, AJ (again), Al Unser, Mario Andretti, Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, Harry Gant, Al Unser, Jr., Geoffrey Bodine, Al Unser, Jr. (again), and Terry Labonte. What a list! These are the Champions of the annual International Race of Champions from 1982 through 1989. Why those years? Because from '82 through '89 IROC (as it was known) ran identically prepared Chevrolet Camaros in their series that pitted drivers from many different racing disciplines against one other. The Camaro/IROC relationship became so important that in 1985, the Bow-tie Brigade decided that their Top-of-the-Line model would be named for the series: The Camaro IROC Z28 was born. (As an aside, it is fun to remember that the intra-GM pony-car rival to the Camaro, the Pontiac Firebird, had famously good luck using the name of another series, the Trans-Am, for their Hi-Po model. Chevy loyalists, who complained for some years that the Camaro had been far more successful in Trans-Am than Pontiac ever was, were quite happy to get the IROC association, an excitement that cooled somewhat when the Trans Am became the choice of IROC in 1999.) Benchmark Classics, America's Hot Rod, Custom, Specialty and Muscle Car Playground has cool, low-mileage '87 IROC Z for you to play with. For the faithful, 1987 is the IROC year of choice, the year that Corvette power was packed under the hood. The original IROC model was focused primarily on handling, with lowered springs, specially valved shocks, thicker sway bars and bigger tires (share with the 'Vette) and dedicated 5-spoke 16" wheels. All this was answer to the question of how to help the Camaro handle as well as the substantially lighter Mustang 5.0. By '87 (the 20th year of Camaro production,) Chevrolet again needed to answer the challenge of the 'Stang, this time with an increase in power, a decision that was universally cheered by the tire smokin' and blacktop blasting fraternity. In went a cast-iron head version of the Corvette's L98 350 V-8, with Tuned Port Injection (TPI) a combination that produced 225 horsepower and "a great big ol' hunk a grunt." All that power ran through a mandatory 4-speed automatic and a 9-bolt Borg-Warner HD 7.75-inch (197 mm) four pinion rear end, built for GM Holden's Limited of Australia. This one came with a 3.27 gear. In addition to the L98, the factory order code B2L also got you J65 rear discs, a G80 limited slip diff. and the KC4 engine oil cooler. This Z was built to handle a whoile lotta fun! These Gen III Camaros were strong cars, continuing the intense competition between the Camaro, Trans Am (now with no hyphen) and the hated Mustang. And they were the last Camaros to be built at the Norwood, Ohio plant, with post '87 production moving to California. Benchmark Classic's 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28 has only 36K miles on the clock. It is black with a red interior and comes equipped with factory T-tops. It has the best factory sound available in that era, the Delco/Bose system, taking up a good chunk of the spare tire well under that signature Camaro glass deck hatch. It still sounds terrific! Those IROC drivers had a blast back in the 80's. My guess is that more than a few of you had some fun back then, too! If you're ready to park the Camaro you always wanted back then in your garage now, I'd recommend a peek behind the big door at Benchmark Classics on University Avenue, Highway 14, in Middleton, Wisconsin. You might not be able to run IN IROC, but you can sure recreate some fun in THIS IROC! Vehicle Options --> About Us Thank you for visiting our eBay auction!
