The body was slightly longer, around 200 inches, and the '56 was slightly heaver than the '55. There were three basic body styles: the 150, the economy model; the 210, the mid-range model; and the Bel Air, which was the top of the line. Within each body style, there were two-door, four-door, convertible and station wagon models. General Specifications The overall length of most 1956 Chevys was just under 200 inches, but the station wagon was just over 200 inches. Most cars weighed 3,200 pounds, but the station wagon was around 3,400 pounds. The cooling systems for models without a heater held 16 quarts of water, and those with a heater held 17 quarts of water. The fuel tanks held 16 gallons of gasoline, and the engines held 4 quarts of oil. The transmission required 2 pints of fluid and the rear axle required 3 1/2 pints. All of the models sold for around $2,000 in 1956, and in reasonable condition, they all fetch $20,000 to $30,000 and up today. Engine Specifications The engine idle speed was 475 RPM. The valve seat angle was 45 degrees. The valve stem clearance was 0.003 to 0.003 on the intake and 0.0015 to 0.003 on the exhaust. The valve stem diameter was 0.3415 to 0.3422 on the input and 0.3410 to 0.3417 on the exhaust. The V8 engine had a displacement of 265 cubic inches and developed 162 horsepower. The straight six had a 235-cubic inch displacement and developed 140 horsepower. Tune Up Specifications The spark plug gap was 0.035, and the firing order was 18436572 (for the V8) or 153624 (for the straight six). The timing mark was the second mark before the "0" mark. Wheel Alignment Specifications The casters desired was +1 and the limits were -1/2 to 1 1/2. The camber desired was +1/2 and the limits were 0 to +1. The toe-in was 1/8 to 3/16 inches, and the toe-out was 18 1/2 degrees on the outer wheel and 20 degrees on the inner wheel. If the toe-out is incorrect and the other adjustments are correct, look for a bent suspension arm or a bent spindle support. The king pin angle should be 3 1/2 to 4 1/2. If the king pin angle is incorrect and the camber is correct, look for a bent suspension arm or a bent spindle support.
