Vehicle Detail
I LOVE THIS CAR! This is such a cool, dignified car. If you are familiar with the Mercedes SL, you know what I'm talking about. This car is being relisted. The first time it sold I went outside the following day and there was a small dent in the driver's door. I had to get it fixed and the door repainted, and now, it is back up for sale. This was originally going to be my restoration project, but I need to clean out the garage. I've already sold a few motorcycle projects, and now it is time for the Benz to go. This car runs well, and was just serviced by OC Benz in Costa Mesa; they gave it a fluid change and a tune-up. The car has an Alpine CD player, but aside from that, everything else looks to be stock. I have been driving this Mercedes back and forth to work locally this last month and it has been reliable. It has a new battery, and the motor starts up right away each time. The tires, while not new, do seem to have a lot of life in the tread. The carpet was recently shampooed, after these photos were taken, and it looks great. The carpet kit for the trunk is complete. This car comes with both tops. The body is straight. The champagne paint has some nicks here and there, typical for a car of this age. So, if you are interested in a daily driver, this may be the car for you. It has a clean California title and is registered through August 2011. It passed its recent smog check with zero problems. Attached is the NADA used vehicle appraisal for a 1985 Mercedes 380SL. You will see that they value a daily driver SL in the $14,000 range, with fine restorations worth considerably more. While this SL would fit into the "low" category on their appraisal, it is not yet worth $14k. It will need some care to get it into that price range. For the restorer:This car has all the wear and tear you would expect from a 25 year old classic. The odometer shows 198000 miles, but it is also not functioning, so I don't know if this is the original odometer/mileage. Everything else on the dash works fine. The motor runs strong, regardless, and the car starts up on the first crank every time. The leather seats are intact, but the piping is worn. The windowsill on the driver's side has a bit of discoloration from the sunlight, but I have been able to to rehab most of it and get it back to the stock color. You can barely see it in the 14th photo. The dash is complete, but it could use a new trim kit. The top of the dash is cracked. The front driver's side rim has a little pitting in the chrome. The brown soft top is intact, but is in poor condition. You will want to replace that if you intend to use it. The window rubber is worn. The horn does not work. There is a 1" tear in the upholstery in the back seat area. As mentioned above, OC Benz just serviced the car and performed the following: 1. Replaced vacuum advance dash pot2. Repaired passenger window switch3. Oil change4. Replaced exhaust hangers5. Replaced burned out bulbs Additionally, they identified future service priorities:1. Rear brakes appear to be at about 40%. Front ones will probably need new rotors.2. Steering has some play3. There is the typical Mercedes oil drip I do not have an owner's manual for it. The heater and AC both work but could use a charge. NO RESERVE!!!
