POP ICON? CULTURAL PHENOMENON? RE-BODIED GOLF? YES ON ALL COUNTS, AND THEN SOME. Long before the words "Toyota Corolla" became a part of American vernacular, there was the "Volkswagen Beetle." The fact that the VW Beetle--a relatively tiny, funny shaped car with the engine at the wrong end (rear) and cooled by the wrong thing (air)--became a sales success in the U.S. and the best selling import brand for all of the 1960's speaks volumes. What a generation of Americans discovered in the VW Beetle (and its many variants) was an incredibly well-built, economical, and reliable car that made no excuses for itself. The little bubble shaped car with the funny whirring engine in the back convinced millions of people that different could, in fact, be better. It became known as the "Beetle" and "Bug" to most people, but it was still officially known as the "Type 1." VW finally gave in to public sentiment and officially began referring to the car as the "Beetle" in 1967. Many people consider the period from 1967-1972 to be the "golden years" for VW in the United States.By the time the 1970's arrived, the Beetle had been in production for 25 years and its design, however good, was being eclipsed by more modern, (and inexpensive) models from Japan, and even some from the U.S., such as the Ford Pinto and Chevy Vega. Meanwhile, despite many special edition models, such at the "Thing," and specially painted editions aimed at the old air-cooled VW "faithful", Beetle sales continued to die a slow death before the model finally ceasing production (for the U.S. market, at least) in 1979. (The Beetle lived on in Mexico and other Central and South American markets with less strict emissions and safety regulations--the last one was built in Mexico in July of 2003.) Over 23.5 million Beetles were built in a 58 year span! By the early 90's, just 20 years after its peak in popularity, the once mighty brand saw its image and sales dwindle to the point where it seemed possible that VW might become a mere footnote in history for the next generation. What VW needed was a reinvention--and FAST! In 1994, talented American automotive designers, J Mays and Freeman Thomas, came up with a concept car that paid homage to the original Type 1 Beetle. It touched a sentimental nerve with the public and was mobbed by adoring crowds on the international auto show tour circuit. Put into production in 1998, the look of the New Beetle was at once retro-cool and cutting edge--both true to the original and still fresh looking. An updated version of both the coupe and convertible debuted in 2006, with more crisply defined fenders and bumper styling which stayed true to the original, while freshening the car somewhat. Changes also included a new, 5 cylinder inline/150 hp powerplant, which became the sole engine for all models after 2006. This version was produced through 2010, when VW announced that New Beetle production would cease at the end of the model year.While there are rumors of a forthcoming replacement in perhaps a year or so, there will be no 2011 model New Beetle, so for now, used is the ONLY way to get one. Here are some tips that will help you understand the shipping process: Generally, there are three types of shipping available, open carrier, enclosed carrier (similar to a moving van), or professional "drive-away" services, which generally offer intrastate delivery. For shorter intrastate deliveries, a professional "drive-away" service can be an excellent delivery method. These companies generally use bonded professional drivers who pick up your vehicle at our facility and drive it to your home location, or one you specify. You will generally pay a set fee (which may or may not require the cost of return transportation for the driver), and for all fuel or other vehicle expenses incurred during transportation. The advantages are usually lower cost and often quicker pick up and delivery times than other methods. The disadvantages include additional miles on placed your vehicle, normal exposure to road hazards in transit, and more limited delivery range. For short intrastate distances or economical cross-country shipping, an open carrier works well. Advantages to this type of shipping are relatively low cost for longer distance deliveries and no additional mileage put on your vehicle. Disadvantages can include possible damage from weather elements such as hail, or chips/dings due to road debris, such as small rocks. And even though your vehicle will leave our facility freshly detailed, if it is traveling very far and depending upon the weather, chances are it will become pretty dirty on the outside during open carrier transport. To prevent top damage from fluids leaking from other vehicles, convertibles should only be shipped on open carriers if a top row space can be reserved (often at extra cost.) Enclosed carriers offer protection from weather elements or road debris damage; eliminating the exposure of your vehicle during transit. Also, NO additional mileage is placed on your vehicle. While this is a clear advantage, the disadvantage of enclosed carrier transport is greater cost. However, for high-value, rare, or exotic vehicles, (especially convertibles,) we highly recommend this type of transport. Plus, your vehicle will generally arrive in the same highly detailed exterior condition as when it left our facility. It's important to note that many "shipping" companies are simply brokers and do not actually own their own carriers. These brokers charge a fee, often called a "deposit", to book your transport, and you will be required to pay for the actual shipping cost with a cashier's check at the time of your vehicle's delivery. When accepting a very low bid (one that is well below others), make sure you understand ALL costs and terms, and get a timetable for delivery first! Ask the carrier if the bid is binding. Often, drivers will give preference to higher cost deliveries once their carriers fill up, and you may find that your pick up and delivery is delayed by a substantial amount of time. A shipping broker may even suggest that you offer to increase your bid in order to secure quicker pick up and delivery.
