Ah, the Pacer. America's cheerful, chubby answer to the foreign car invasion of the 70's. It would have been revolutionary, a compact car with the interior room of a Chevy Impala and a GM rotary engine whirring away under the hood. But engineering difficulties and disappointing fuel economy led GM to cancel the rotary project, leaving AMC with a mostly tooled up body and no drive train. Why didn't they pick up the phone and call Mazda? We'll never know. Instead, they adapted their tried and true inline six cylinder engine and transmission, intruding an extra two feet beyond the original firewall and pretty much ruining the roomy interior. At day's end, it was wide and that was about it. Hence those TV ads for the "Wide Small Car."They actually sold pretty well at first, and then the addition of the wagon provided a car with MUCH more usable interior space. But the little bubble turned out to be pretty much a flash in the automotive pan. From a production high of 117,244 Pacers in 1976, production fell quickly. In the final production year of 1980, only 1,734 Pacers left the factory, of which only 1,341 were wagons like this. This car is a 1980 D/L wagon. It has the late styling touches, including the raised hood with chrome molding and stand up ornament. It's well equipped (especially for a Pacer) including the following:258 Cubic inch 6 cylinder engineAutomatic TransmissionAir ConditioningD/L packagePower LocksCruise ControlPower SteeringTilt Steering WheelAM/FM Stereo with cassette (period correct)Rear WiperRear Window DefrosterTwo Tone PaintStriped velour interiorIt spent much of its life in Washington and was registered there. I rescued it from a neighbor who was closing down their desert house and did not wish to take it back. It's a sound little car, has a great body with excellent floor, although I have noted some rust spots in the doors. It is an older repaint of driver quality, but I took a polisher to the hood and it jumped up nicely. It starts easily and runs and drives well, but keep in mind it is a 30 year old car and AMC was seldom mistaken for Mercedes Benz. Odometer shows just over 93,000 and is believed correct. The biggest flaw is a dent in the driver's door, shown in pictures. The interior is one of the nicest Pacer interiors you will find. The original striped disco frenzy velour has one flaw on the passenger seat, the other positions look great. The dash pad, protected by a cover, is NOT cracked underneath (there was some flaking paint on the metal dash that they covered. Likewise the door panels are NOT cracked and the headliner (kind of a pebble grained plastic board) is intact. Pacer storage compartments HATE the sun and this is one of the better ones you will find. Plastic molded sides are intact with only minor wear on the B post trim which you see in most Pacers. Carpet intact with trim strips still present. A/C engages but not cold. Clear WA title. Decent and presentable to drive and enjoy, would really be cute if you gave it a nice repaint. I don't have the time for the project. I didn't care for the wheel covers so I got a set of the color matched ones, they are in a box in the back and go with the car as well as factory and Haines manuals. The car is located in Palm Springs, CA. I have easy access to the Dependable Auto Shippers terminal in Cathedral City, CA for US buyers. We're about 100 miles to the Port of Long Beach for you European Pacerphiles. Email me with any questions for for appointment to inspect. Thanks for looking and happy bidding. Someone is going to get a very rare little car! Your browser does not support JavaScript.
