Vehicle Detail
1983 Mk1 Volkswagen Rabbit Gti 2.0 16v Block out of a 1990's Vw Passat 1.8 16v Cylinder Head out of 1989 Vw Jetta GLI Stock 4k Close Ratio Transmission w/ 90mm Axles Car has a working Sunroof. Plastic Aftermarket Eurobumpers. New Clutch -The engine bottom end is a 2.0 16v from a early 90's passat and the head is a 1.8 16v from an '89 Jetta Gli. All the fuel injection and ignition is also from the Jetta. Raceland header that mates the engine with rabbit really nicely. -Transmission is a 4k-- its a super close ratio 5-speed that is stock in a GTI of this era. It got a new clutch with the engine swap. Short shifter kit installed. Suspension: -H&R cup kit all the way around and the front struts are adjustable for firmness. The entire car has Polyurethane bushings... everything BUT the engine mounts, everything. All of the suspension components are tight. There is a lower Stress bar as well. Interior: The Interior was originally BLUE Gti interior. The factory seats were trashed so I have in a set of black mk2 Golf Gti seats ( non-recaro ) There is no back seat or back tray / cargo cover. Driver side seat belt is missing but there is a 5 point harness installed instead. Passenger side original seat belt is there. Original Blue dash does have 2 cracks in the dash close to the windshield. The door panels are nice and original , the carpet is 27 years old and has some dark stains but its there. Headliner and rear sail panels were replaced with non factory material - they look a litte lighter blue than what was original. No stereo / no speakers in the dash. ( car was meant to auto-cross or weekend cruiser ) EXTERIOR: Car came from AZ - RUST FREE - small areas of discoloration from rock chips but no ROT / RUST holes. Passenger side front fender flare is cracked and you can see 2 small dents hidden behind it - i havent pulled it off to inspect it. There are few small dents on the roof - hard to photograph but they are Paintless Dent Removable i think. Driver side rear next to rear tail-light has small dent / ding - driver side tail-light looks cleaner than the other one so it was probably replaced sometime in the car lifetime. Paint looks to be original. There are a few dings and bumps on doors but nothing horrible. If potential buyer wants more pics - of course email me. It is at body shop right now getting a BRAND NEW WINDSHIELD ( $270 OUCH ) Wheels: The wheels installed / pictured are 16x7 MOTEGI - painted a flat black with Mk4 VW Center Caps. Tires look good and are 205/40/16 ( cant remember the brand name ). These wheels are not hub-centric so at higher speeds you feel a very slight vibration. My plan was to remove these and install one of the other many sets of wheels i have for sale ( check other auctions ) Also includes in the auction are a set of original Rabbit GTI 14x6 Snowflakes w/ tires. The wheels are in great shape and so are the tires - 1 rim has slight rubage on the outter lip but they are straight. Mechanically: First i must say " WOW " it is such a blast to drive. Everyone gets a kick out of it how quick and " go cart " like it feels. Starts up fine and drives, shifts fine. I bought the car not completely finished. The fuel system / engine wiring harness is from 1989 Jetta GLi - so the original wire harness from the Rabbit is still in the engine bay. Which actually worked out for me as alot of gauges were not working and i was able to tap into the original GTI harness and get things to work. The cold start valve is not hooked up electronically ( meaning that it is plugged into the intake manifold but the electrical connector to run it is not hooked up ) There is a " BLOCK HEATER " plug hanging out in the engine bay - which i found odd but i left it alone. Battery is BRAND NEW AS OF 11/04/2010. What it needs: As mentioned above - the car is currently at body shop getting a new windshield installed ( $270 ) I also have ordered a new Fuel accumilator to solve a small leak of gas marking it spot in garage ( $200 ) The odometer reads 100,099 and it doesnt move - the speedometer works. The fuel gauge always reads 1/4 tank - i am trying to find a new sending unit and hope that solves problem - i will edit the ad if i get it resolved. No stereo / NO speakers Missing Back seat Has driver side 5 point safty harness / original seat belt has been removed. Black non-original seats are pretty tough / rough. Dash has small cracks - two of them Small dents on roof / rear quarter panel / next to tail-light Grill is original and missing a small peice of the red trim ( 1 inch ) Current wheels installed are not hub-centric and vibrate slightly at highway speeds I just bought a rear hatch strut which i will install once it gets here. There is no spare / jack - i might have one kicking around the garage but not sure E-brake does NOT work - havent investigated it. Steering column bearing is wiggly - i have a new bearing and am getting that fixed along with fuel accumilator next week. OVERALL: I dont want to call this car a project - cuz most projects dont run and drive as nice as this does. But it kinda is a project with its needed interior and small issues. This car was daily driven and has been on 2 hour road trips. So its reliable / well built but could use some TLC. I have 2 stall garage and with winter practically here i bought car from Vw Mechanic who performed the engine swap and he lost interest. I bought it and sorted it out and now realized i dont want it to sit outside in Nebraska Winter. With it being so rust free and solid - id hate to see it get covered in snow- car was garaged the whole time it was in Iowa - and has never seen Mid-west winter ( been driven at least in one - it saw it when garage door opened ) Car is SOLD AS IS WHERE IS in Lincoln Nebraska - 68502 Shipping of course an option at buyers expense.
