Vehicle Detail
A BRIEF HISTORY: This listing is for a 1988 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Wolfsburg Edition with the "Weekender Package." This van has been around and as you can see the body is rough shape. There have technically been two owners for this van. I was about 7 or 8 years old when I went with my dad to buy this van new from a dealership in Dover, DE in 1989. The dealer had driven it around as a personal commuter and the vehicle had about 5000 miles on it when my dad purchased it that year. I sort of inherited it in about 2003. This van has been driven up and down the east coast a number of times as well as the west coast. It has been to Yellowstone, Redwoods National Forest, and the Dakotas. I have some, but not all of the receipts for maintenance and repair over the years. If you have any questions feel free to message me and I'll send you my phone number that way we can talk over the phone if that would be more comfortable. Also, please note that the odometer stopped working at 73K and I never had it repaired. My best guess is that this engine has 180,000 miles on it. REGARDING THE TITLE: The vehicle is titled in my name, although I can't seem to find the actual title itself. I did however, call up the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles today and asked them to verify the title for me. The clerk I spoke with found the record. Apparently due to updated Maine Law, the state will no longer re-issue a title for anything 1995 or older even if a title was issued in the past and there is still record to that effect. I did however pay to have a "letter of verification" sent to my house which will explain all of this as well as perform the same function as an actual title. The bottom line is that if you decide to buy this van, everything will be legal. I will also do a bill of sale in person. Features: Power windows/locks Cruise control 4 speed manual transmission RWD 4 cylinder Rear wiper/defrost Weekender package (table, fold-down back seat w/ curtains, removable rear facing seats) Tinted windows Exterior Color Maroon Interior Gray cloth MAJOR REPAIRS: Engine rebuild New fuel injectors New fuel tank In 2003 or 2004 I had the engine rebuilt by some professional mechanics who specialize in Volkswagens, particularly Vanagons. Their website is www.foreignautosupply.com if you care to research them. They are without a doubt the most professional and knowledgeable mechanics I have ever met. They also put new fuel injectors, a new fuel tank, rotors, and drums on my van at that time. GOOD THINGS ABOUT VAN: -Interior is very clean (there has always been some sort of a secondary carpet over the factory carpeting) -Pioneer CD player with remote -Curtains are in immaculate condition -Factory repair and owners' manuals included -Seat belts work -New brake premium brake pads included (in box) -New brake shoes with hardware included (in box) -New motor mounts included (in plastic) -New custom manufactured power steering fluid lines installed on vehicle -New Die Hard Battery 600 CCA unused and still under warranty included -Glove box Key included -Cruise control worked last time I drove it NOT SO GREAT THINGS ABOUT VAN: -There is significant rust and dents to certain parts of the body. -Rear bumper is missing -Spare Tire is missing -Can't get van started right now -Crack in front bumper -Lock on trunk is broken -Odometer stopped at 73K and I'm guessing that there is maybe 180-200K on engine -No key for sliding door (the handle was replaced) -Rear radiator missing. (There was a crack in it and was unrepairable. The rear blower still works quite well and when you crank up the heat it gets very warm in the back. What I did was re-route the coolant flow so that it wouldn't leak underneath the rear bench seat) MORE INFO: The last time I had this van running was about a year ago which is when I put the new power steering fluid lines on and the new battery in. I was actually having trouble starting it and the old Die Hard battery was still under warranty. I took it to Sears and had it replaced for free which started the warranty over again. Upon installing the new battery however I was unable to get the van started. After that I wasn't around for a few months to work on it and one thing led to another...and the van didn't get touched until recently. Three of the tires are Michelin MXT tires by the way with some mileage left on them. As you may well know, the Micheline MXL and MXT were made almost exclusively for the Vanagon as they have reinforced sidewalls. The other tire is just a used Goodyear. In one of the pictures of the back bench you may notice some imprints on the seat cushions. That is because the seat was flipped forward with some miscellaneous items left on it for a couple months and some imprints were left. This van did have a lot of sentimental value to me at one point in time and I have put a lot of money into it over the years to keep it running. I am not an expert mechanic however and I just can't seem to find the time to put into this van. Please feel free to message me with any questions. If you want to talk over the phone, just ask and I'll send you my number. If you don't live extremely far away and we can find a mutual time, I may be willing to put this van on a car trailer and tow it to you. I would only ask for the cost of fuel and the trailer rental. ABOUT THE ENGINE: Although I was not able to start the engine a few days ago, I do not believe that has seized or locked up. I am able to physically rotate the engine with my hand using the belts. I think that the starter motor is not working and needs to be replaced. The last time I was seriously trying to get this van up and running (about a year ago) the starter motor cranked and the engine turned over. Now, the starter is not cranking yet I can physically turn the engine. The possible problem would therefore be the starter or maybe the spark plugs. Just a guess.
