Vehicle Detail
This is my awesome 1981 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper bus, which I'm selling with NO RESERVE. This is the last of the air-cooled VW buses- after this they went to water-cooled (boring!). This bus has more character than an episode of Looney Tunes! This bus has the air-cooled 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with a 4-speed manual transmission. This bus has been owned exclusively by VW mechanics for the past 10 years. It has been fully mechanically reconditioned and rebuilt. Recent work done includes a rebuilt motor including new pistons, jugs (cylinders), newer AMC cylinder heads, tops seals and more. Also recently replaced was the clutch, fuel tank and seals/hoses/gaskets, and battery. The tires are brand new. There are NO known mechanical problems. The engine starts and runs beautifully and makes tons of power (it is a 2.0 liter). The transmission shifts perfectly, and the brakes, suspension and steering is all tight and very good. I would trust this bus to drive to California tomorrow. This Vanagon camper was originally from out West (Colorado) and therfore the body is completely solid and in great shape. There is certainly minor surface rust, etc, but the body is totally solid with no rot or rust-out. It is solid and strong throughout, even underneath. The paint and exterior are original and far from showroom condition, though it looks presentable. The paint is faded, nicked, cracked and has been brush-touched in many spots, although it has recently been buffed and waxed, and if you take a look at the photos, it looks pretty good! The canvas pop-top is in perfect condition with no rips or tears. The zippers work on the vent window. In the photos there are some shadows that look like rips in the screen, but in fact there are NO rips or tears in the canvas or screens. This Westy is the camping edition, obviously- it has the pop-top with a bed up top, rear bench seat that folds to a double bed, plus a little galley with a sink, countertop and icebox. There is a swing-out dining table plus tons of storage compartments and cabinets. The front seats rotate around to face the rear, so you can seat up to 4 people when you're camped and socializing (more people if they hang out up top!). The bus sleeps 4 comfortably. There is running water in the sink, both from the onboard storage tank or from the hookup to city water. It has an internal 110V system that plugs in to outside power. I have all of the curtains and covers for the windows, for privacy when you're camping. All the screens are intact so you can camp in the summer without worrying about bugs. The interior of the bus is in great shape for the age- the fabrics and carpets are in good condition. Only the driver's seat shows normal wear, but it is still in good shape. This bus has been to MANY local VW enthusiast gatherings, and camped with all of the other motorheads! If you've been to an event in the midwest in the past 10 years or so, you've probably seen this bus! While the engine and mechanicals are in excellent shape, one downfall of these buses is the heat. The heat has been routed to the front windshield only, and it doesn't work spectacularly well at all. The next owner will want to address this if you plan to drive in cold weather a lot. I should also mention that the windshield has a crack in it. Overall this is a great bus. Mechanically it is excellent, and I would trust it to drive anywhere. Cosmetically it isn't perfect, or even close, but I think it compares pretty favorably to others of the same age. Importantly, it isn't rusted-out or rotted out, and the interior and canvas are clean and in good shape. I think this will make another Westy enthusiast very happy. If you have questions, you can call me at 440 339 4341. I have this bus stored indoors in Willoughby, OH. Interested bidders are welcome to come look at the bus before bidding.
