Who, you say?? Well, "Alec" Issigonnis was to the MINI what Ferdinand Porsche was to the Volkswagen Beetle. Seeking a way to get Great Brittain back on its feet in the years following WWII, he came up with the concept of a modern vehicle that would be easy to park in dense European cities, stingy with petrol ("gas"), while allowing four full sized adults and their luggage to travel in a space roughly half the size or the average "midsize" vehicle today! Issigonnis created a modern template (referred to as a "two box" design) that is still followed by automakers today: a small and compact front "box" containing an engine turned sideways, with front wheel drive, and another second "box" hatchback body behind the engine, allowing for space efficient packaging of people. Everything from the VW Rabbit in the 70's to today's MINI, owes its design layout to Issigonnis' novel idea. In August, 1959, the original MINI was born. It later spawned station wagon and jeep-like versions, and was such a success that it set a record for the most produced English car, with over 5.3 million copies made through the year 2000.) Naturally, "Sir" Alec Issigonnis was Knighted by the Queen of England for his efforts on behalf of the British Empire. The disadvantages include additional miles on placed your vehicle, normal exposure to road hazards in transit, and more limited delivery range. For short intrastate distances or economical cross-country shipping, an open carrier works well. Advantages to this type of shipping are relatively low cost for longer distance deliveries and no additional mileage put on your vehicle. Disadvantages can include possible damage from weather elements such as hail, or chips/dings due to road debris, such as small rocks. And even though your vehicle will leave our facility freshly detailed, if it is traveling very far and depending upon the weather, chances are it will become pretty dirty on the outside during open carrier transport. To prevent top damage from fluids leaking from other vehicles, convertibles should only be shipped on open carriers if a top row space can be reserved (often at extra cost.) Enclosed carriers offer protection from weather elements or road debris damage; eliminating the exposure of your vehicle during transit. Also, NO additional mileage is placed on your vehicle. While this is a clear advantage, the disadvantage of enclosed carrier transport is greater cost. However, for high-value, rare, or exotic vehicles, (especially convertibles,) we highly recommend this type of transport. Plus, your vehicle will generally arrive in the same highly detailed exterior condition as when it left our facility. It's important to note that many "shipping" companies are simply brokers and do not actually own their own carriers. These brokers charge a fee, often called a "deposit", to book your transport, and you will be required to pay for the actual shipping cost with a cashier's check at the time of your vehicle's delivery. When accepting a very low bid (one that is well below others), make sure you understand ALL costs and terms, and get a timetable for delivery first! Ask the carrier if the bid is binding.
