Vehicle Detail

“Though it looks like any other 1980's Mercedes E-class, this is actually a very rare 1987 Mercedes 300 TD (Touring Diesel) station wagon With absolute conviction, I can say, the 1987 Mercedes 300TD is one of the very best automobiles ever made. Though I don't have 7 friends, should I acquire a few more, I will be able to bring them with me in absolute comfort. It is a 6 cylinder turbo charged diesel and it was only available in 1987. The W124 body cars (the 80s E-classes) were the last true Mercedes that felt like they were machined from a single block of steel. Though diesel is often snickered at as being a poor performer and a black smoky mess, it does not tell the true appeal of diesel. Sure, the prior 4 and 5 cylinder, non-turbo charged diesels were slow as hell, but that's why the 1987 Mercedes 300TD is so great. Only 1987 saw the full 6 cylinder diesel performance. The acceleration is not bristling, but the speed is absolute. At high speed, the Mercedes W124's hunkers down and holds the road like no other car. The driver feels absolutely connected, aware and uncommonly safe. It is a car for individuals that enjoy driving and don't want to be divorced from the action. It is a car of respect. I do not feel abused and cheated as I do in most modern cars. The W124 represent an absolute end of a marquee. Mercedes Benz has sold its soul as they tried to be more like BMW and Lexus. They lost the uniquely Mercedes feel of absolute integrity as they tried to build a light and nimble car like the BMW. The new Daimler Chrysler's are not Mercedes' and they failed to be as good at being a BMW as BMWs already are. The 300TD is not a Bugatti or a Porsche GT, it is a car for practical people that want to be treated tenderly. It is a transition car - a throughly modern driver that still has a soul. “- another Happy 300TD owner blogging on the 'net! We’ve enjoyed owning this diesel wagon for the last 8 years. It has proven to be a very solid and reliable car. It even has a block heater for easy winter starting. The car is drivable as is, but the front passenger side strut tower is partially detached due to rust, and will need to welded or braced in some manner. The A/C doesn’t work. The coolant was converted to Freeze-12. The radio plays, but the tape player doesn’t work. The passenger side rear window doesn’t operate. The passenger side front window can be a bit slow in closing. The sun roof works, but the inner liner is detached and needs to be manually slid as the outer sunroof is opened. The left turn signal flashes rapidly. The transmission shifts properly but is a bit hard until the car warms up. There’s plenty of power in acceleration. Apart from the rust inside the passenger front wheel well there is also rust below the fuel door , in front of the rear wheels and behind the front wheels, and on the driver’s side rear door. The belt chirps but otherwise works fine. This car has the third row seating. The roof crossbeams are still retained as well as the headrests . The rear driver side door’s handle is detached– I still have it, but it will need to be reattached or replaced. I also have the speaker grilles for the rear doors. I also have the missing trim piece from the bottom edge of the passenger front door. The front seat bottoms and armrest need repair. The passenger side visor clip is broken, but is easily replaced. There is some black paint on the driver side lower panels and front driver side wheel. The vacuum line to the rear hatch is cut, so it doesn’t lock with the central locking system, but it latches securely. A small amount of water comes in the back hatch, but I’m told this can probably be fixed by adjusting the hatch hinge. Our mechanic repaired the self leveling suspension in the back, with new globes and a rebuilt pump. I have some of the repair records for this car. The odometer stopped at 269246 miles, I would estimate the actual mileage at 280,000.The pictures and video are part of the description. The paint is original and shows wear. The interior is MB TEX. If you have any questions or concerns please ask! I’ve made a video showing the various dents and scratches on the exterior and included many pictures to give you a good idea of the condition of the car. If you wish to inspect the car or drive it, please contact me through eBay to arrange a test drive. The car is sold AS IS. It will need some repairs, and the cost of those repairs will be the sole responsibility of the new owner.
