We'd call current U.S. brand offerings in this category "half-hearted", at best. And while we both love and sell a lot of Toyota Tacomas, our passion for the Nissan Frontier (and this NISMO Off-Road Edition 4x4, in particular) has continued to grow. The Tacoma and Frontier technically occupy the same category, but each seems to have carved out its own special niche.The Toyota represents all that is good in the Japanese style compact pickup...light weight, fuel efficiency, durability, sturdy design and construction, and quality assembly that holds up year after year. But if the Tacoma is the guy at Lifetime Fitness who uses all of the latest electonically aided equipment to stay in shape, the 2008 Nissan Frontier NISMO Off-Road 4x4 is the guy from Gold's Gym who's lifting free weights, drinking more than a few protein shakes, and maybe even hitting the steroids (never!)...this truck is "bulked up"! Where the NISSAN Frontier NISMO 4x4 is bigger is in the places that matter to lots of us. It's just a bit wider, taller and larger than other trucks in this class. From the seats, to the door openings, to the switchgear and controls, everything is upsized just enough to make "full-sized Americans" like us right at home. The NISMO has so much heavy duty off road gear (skid plates, HD springs, Bilstein shocks, DANA 44 axle, etc.) that there's just about nothing you can't conquer. At the same time, its on-road driving manners are incredible, with handling and acceleration that belie its 4300+ pound girth (told you it's been hitting the protein shakes HARD!) Even if you're not a 'full-sized American", we think you'll find LOTS to appreciate about the NISMO. If BMW built a pickup truck, we imagine it would drive a lot like this one, and that's intended as high praise to BOTH manufacturers...the NISMO is just that good. Too bad more people don't know about it...In fact, this 2008 NISMO was the last year for the model. NISSAN decided to keep its motorsport branding to the sports cars, so starting in 2009, this truck was renamed the PRO 4X, to go along with Nissan's other truck branding. However, the new version is pretty much the same, with all of the same gear and a price tag approaching $34 GRAND!! Ouch! Gently used seems to be the way to go, doesn't it?! With just over 19K miles, it's barely broken in. It looks and smells brand new, and drives that way too!
