Vehicle Detail
This very pretty primrose MGB is a daily driver, and very original. Starts on the button and stops straight. The MGB production number of 41551 indicates that it was manufactured between February 1964 and September 1964. The gearbox is four forward gears without syncromesh on 1st gear as was the custom then. The engine has probably been replaced as it is gray instead of red. As was customary for that model year, there is no engine number. It is most probably a three bearing engine. Oil pressure is around 60 lbs, temperature normal in the Reno heat, and the ammeter shows the dynamo is doing its job. Car & Driver said of the engine in their 1964 test of the car that 3 main bearing engines had been known to complete mileage of over 120,000 without a crank regrind. Maximum speed 106 mph, 0-60 12.2 seconds, fuel consumption 21 to 29 mpg. (Source Lindsay Porter Book) The paint, carpets, windshield, exhaust and the very comfortable seats are new. The car comes with a custom hardtop with removable rear window which uses the original soft top fittings, an original rail hoop soft top, rails for a tonneau (which it does not have) and a more modern set of rails for a permanent soft top. Any 45 year old car has some characteristics. On this car they are the rev counter has a will of its own, although I am working on this. The speedometer works on the law of average which means the needle swings around so if you average out the low and high points you are probably about right. The serviceable hardtop would benefit with new seals as they are as old as the car. The trunk rubber seal is new and needs to settle. Rust is minimal, having been a California and Nevada car for much of its life, limited to around that battery boxes as far as I can see which is pretty common and should give no cause for concern. Converted to 12 volt, the spare box for odds and ends has a plastic liner. Lots of new parts: exhaust, battery, coil, fuel pump and many others including steering components. It does have a Weber carbureter and a non standard steering wheel which makes the steering lighter as I am disabled.. The car comes with a Haynes manual, original works manual and a book on restoration. I would look on this car as an investment. For the purist, the car comes with an original oil filter assembly and some useful spares. Auction guide price is $10-$15000 for a class 2 car according to British Motoring (Summer 2010) for a chrome bumper car. This car is between a class 2 and a class 3 in my opinion.
