This car received a cost-no-object restoration of over $90,000. It was COMPLETELY disassembled, and EVERY part refurbished to as-new or better standards...or replaced (the last six images below show some of the critical stages of restoration). The restoration began on a car that had been owned by the same gentleman since 1969. This man "knew he had something rare" and held on to it. How many 1961 Galaxie Starliners could have been built with the High-Performance Triple-carb 390 but without a radio! This classic is one of the true "founding fathers" of the muscle-car movement. My client is the very serious collector who undertook the restoration. To tackle this immense job, he hired one of best painter/restorers I have ever had the pleasure to meet (and he is available for questions about ANY aspect of the restoration). The car has been restored as closely as possible to its original condition from the factory (it was obtained from the owner who had it since 1969) and the ONLY significant modification made during restoration was the movement of the shifter from the column to the floor, and the switch from a 3-speed manual to a 4-speed. This change was considered highly desirable for obvious operational reasons, but it was also deemed appropriate because Ford recognized the need for a floor shifter shortly after the car's introduction and began offering a 4-speed Borg-Warner unit...which is exactly what was added when the restoration was underway. This engine - combined with the handsome wind-cheating Starliner roof-line which was created to enhance racetrack performance - makes this one of the most historically important Ford performance cars ever built. It was for this reason that so much attention to detail was lavished on this car. I have been to Concours d'Elegance events with cars valued at $1 million and more, but none have impressed me more in fit and finish than this extraordinary Starliner. Of course, we have not seen every Starliner in the world, but it would be very hard to imagine a nicer one. The car is equipped with the famed Holman Moody "competition proven camshaft" too! I could "go on and on" about this gorgeous car...but pictures really are worth a thousand words so please examine every one as the best testimony to the extreme care that went into bringing this rare beauty back to its original glory. The car was built 1/27/61, the engine block 1/24/61, and the intake on 1/11/61. Only a "handful" of test miles have been put on the car since restoration. We welcome inspection of the car...which is located in Athens, GA (approx. 70 miles from Atlanta). As a final note for those who are examining codes, the restorer of the car reports that though the engine was equipped with a solid-lifter High Performance 3x2BBL 390CID engine, the ONLY code that Ford had (for 1961 cars) for a 390-equipped car was "Z". In later years, more 390CID codes were added. A similar situation existed in the early days of the Thunderbird Roadster...there was only one convertible code available...so no VIN tag distinction existed (initially) between regular 1962 TBird convertibles and Roadsters.
