Vehicle Detail
On the block is a 1975 Cosworth Vega numbered 0657. I purchased this vehicle several years ago from a gentleman in Arizona with the intention of driving it and having some fun with it. I did manage to put a few miles on it before I parked it to fix an oil leak. Like every other project that I have worked on in the past (including 2 others that are currently on the go) I find it extremely difficult to address the issue at hand and then to leave well-enough alone. You know - you’re here now, why not fix that other thing that you just discovered! The problem with that is: one thing leads to another and before you know it, everything is lying on the garage floor and you now have multiple projects on-the-go. This is where I find myself at the moment. My current situation dictates that I downsize and this may very well be your good fortune. I am offering this vehicle for sale at No Reserve and as is, where is, with no guarantees, no warranties and no strings attached. What you see, is what you get! In my opinion: a great car that I’m finding very hard to part with. The car is currently sitting with the mechanicals (engine, transmission, driveline) removed, and the engine completely torn-down. Everything that has been removed from this car is available and will be included with the car. The car sat in the garage for some time while I was working on it and then moved outside and placed under a cover. It still looks like the day I got it except for the tires (incorrect 60 series) which are now weather-cracked. There is also a small dent in the left front fender which was there when I got the car and some surface rust on the leading edge of the hood. As with most of these cars, the battery tray is rusted, but still reasonably solid. The floor (body and trunk) as well as the doors, trunk lid, hood, roof and door sills are solid. The car looks like it was painted some years ago, but has stood-up amazingly well. As for the interior, it is in extremely good condition for a car of this age and comes with the original style rubber floor-mats. The driver’s seat is ripped in the usual place (see picture) and the fabric on the top-rear portion of the rear seat is worn which is typical for these cars (see picture). As well as the mechanicals being removed, I have removed some of the interior trim pieces with the intention of nothing more than cleaning the “nooks and crannies”, taping wiring where necessary, etc. All trim pieces are of course included with the car. As well, the radio, the glove box, air vents, etc., have also been removed and are included. The dash wiring has been re-taped where necessary and “tied” in place and a new fuse block has been installed, as the original had a broken corner. Some of the original sensors (ignition key warning for one) were missing and as part of the dash wiring restoration have been replaced. As anyone who has ever owned a Cosworth knows, these sensors are “funky” at the best of times and were probably removed for that reason. As for the mechanicals: the transmission is the original and bears the ID – 15U218645. The engine was rebuilt at some point in its life and the block is a mismatch. I believe that it is a standard Vega block and modified for the Cosworth application. The cylinders have been sleeved. I personally was not happy with the rebuild when I tore the engine down. In my opinion (for what that’s worth) the block (more specifically the head bolt holes) were not sufficiently de-greased. There was considerable residue in the head bolt holes which led to one of the bolts causing a small fracture in the block at the bottom of the bolt hole. The block, although given a power wash, needs to be professionally degreased and then inspected prior to a rebuild. As for the head, cams carrier, etc., I’m assuming that these are original. A new stainless steel muffler was installed shortly after I got this car and still looks good after all this time. This muffler was “tucked” into the original position along with a new tailpipe and stainless end tip. I have shown the mileage on this car as 99999 as it is unknown. The odometer currently reads 05874. I will include a number of various parts (many of which were eBay purchases) with this car, as well as literature that I no longer have a need for and will remain with the car. PARTS that will be included with this car: One Goodyear Custom Steel Gard Radial Tire BR70-13. This tire is new (NOS) and should be used for display/show purposes only. (Note: An original BR70-13 is mounted on the spare wheel. The tires on the car are 60 series, as noted earlier, and are weather-cracked). Cosworth Dash Bezels – Original that came with the car (refurbished at some point with a lacquer type finish?) and numbered 0657, as well as 1 additional one whose gold appliqué has been sanded off. The car currently has the Vega GT dash bezel installed. I thought that I would try it, and quite honestly, I like the look. Trunk End Piece (for lack of a better description). This is the plastic piece that extends the width of the trunk and covers the taillight wiring and surrounds the trunk latch. This piece was purchased used, but is complete. The original is included with the car, but has a piece missing. Ignition Distributor Cap (new) Ignition Rotor (new) Spare Set of Cosworth Pistons and Connecting Rods (used) Spare Ignition Distributor with Drive and Ignition Wires, Cap, Rotor and Wire Retainer (used) Spare Oil Pump (used) Spare Cosworth Dash Wiring Harness (used and may be incomplete). 2 Headlight Housings (left & right side) (used) Spare Ignition Distributor with Cap and Rotor (used). Note: no drive or ignition wires. Original Pulse Tubes. These were removed at some point and the manifold “plugged”. Spare Steering Wheel with Standard Vega Centre Cap (used) Miscellaneous Switches, Relays, etc. (Cosworth and Standard Vega) (used) 1 Standard Vega Water Pump (new) 1 Vega Water Pump with no Pulley (new but seized) 1 Vega Water Pump with no Pulley (used) 1 Vega Water Pump “Shell” (used) 1 Cosworth Water Pump Pulley (used) 1 Standard Vega Water Pump Pulley (used) Standard Vega Dash Wiring Harness with Fuse Block (used). Note: I believe this harness is complete, but cannot say for sure. Standard Vega Gauges, Radio and Heater Control with Mount (used) Standard Vega Dash Bezel and Mount (used) Stewart-Warner Gauges and Mount (oil pressure & water temperature). These came with the car, but were removed. Mount is still on the original dash bezel. Aftermarket Fog Lamps and Covers. These came with the car but were removed. A “roll” of pin striping that may be for the rear of the car? I have no idea if this is original or after-market. This came with the car. LITERATURE that will be included with this car: Original Dealer Invoice showing original owner. Original Window Sticker (damaged). Various other pieces that came with the car: Odometer Mileage Statement, Accessories Install Sheet (showing undercoat), Warranty Information Folder, Consumer Information Folder, Maintenance Schedule Folder, Goodyear Tires Owner’s Guide and Tire Adjustment Policy Folder, a sleeve noting that the Cosworth Vega is equipped with electronic fuel injection (I believe this was on the driver’s side sun visor when the car was delivered), a card on how the “Electro-Clear” rear window defogger is operated, as well as some invoices noting work that was done on the car. Some documents that were required when I purchased the vehicle, as well as some others that have remained with the car. All of the above I have put into a 3-ring binder with plastic sheet protectors. 1975 Vega Owner’s Manual (not Cosworth) Cosworth Vega Owner’s Association – Technical Bulletins – Updated 12-’94. All sheets are in protective plastic sheet covers and in a 3-ring binder. CVOA Region 16 Twin Cam Times – Official Newsletters of Region 16 CVOA. Although the cover sheet shows 7/94 – 3/99, this set appears to cover July 94 to Sept 96. This is exactly the way I received it when purchased. All sheets are in protective plastic sheet covers and in a 3-ring binder. Cosworth Vega Owner’s Association Magazines – The official magazine of the CVOA. Issues numbered 84 through 90 which cover the 1st Quarter of 2003 through to the 2nd quarter of 2006. Issue #88 of the magazine has a two page feature on the 75-0657 (the car that’s for sale here) written by a previous owner. Two (2) spiral-bound books compiled and edited by Mark A. Rock of the Cosworth Vega Owner’s Association. Volumes 1 & 2 – Cosworth Vega Tips and Tricks Knowledge Base. These 2 books are a compilation of Cosworth Vega’s message board postings, internet postings and postings gleaned from other sources featuring hard-to-find information about the Cosworth Vega. A daunting task to say the least and kudos to the editor on his efforts to assemble this plethora of information in a structured format. Both of these books are in “as new” condition. 1975 Cosworth Vega – Service and Overhaul Manual Supplement (ST 353-75). This manual is a reproduction from Helm Inc. that I purchased directly from them some time ago. This manual is a supplement to the 1974 Vega Service and Overhaul Manual and 1975 Vega and Monza 2+2 Service and Overhaul Manual Supplement. This manual is made up of loose pages in a protective plastic wrapper. 1976 Vega and Monza Chassis Service and Overhaul Manual Supplement (ST 300-76). This manual is a reproduction from Helm Inc. – This manual is a supplement to the 1974 Vega Service and Overhaul Manual. It covers service operations and overhaul procedures for the 1976 Vega and Monza vehicles. This manual is made up of loose pages in a protective plastic wrapper. An original General Motors of Canada parts catalogue for Vega and Monza 1971-76. (used) This is the catalogue that GM dealers used in their parts department. When I purchased this catalogue it came as 2 separate books: 1.) green pages showing diagrams of all the various parts of the car, as well as associated part numbers and their groups 2.) white pages showing an Alphabetical Index of all Groups, as well as a Numerical Index in part number sequence showing part numbers and their associated groups. That is followed by pages and pages of part numbers and their descriptions in Group Number sequence. The catalogue is dated “Effective May 1981” and shows “no. P016”. Both sections (green and white pages) are in individual 3-ring binders and all pages are in protective sheet covers. Assembly Manuals – these are reproductions that I purchased from the CVOA. 1.) 1974 Cosworth Vega Engine Assembly Guide and 2.) 1975 Cosworth Vega Assembly Manual which covers all aspects of the vehicle assembly. Both of these manuals are in 2 separate 3-ring binders and all pages are in protective sheet covers. Some Points Regarding Payment and Transportation of this Vehicle that Need to be Considered: 1.) This vehicle is being sold as a rolling chassis and needs to be trailered to its destination. I do not recommend a tow bar, or other similar means, as the tires are weather-cracked, as noted in this listing. 2.) There are numerous boxes of parts, as well as other pieces such as the engine block, head, cams carrier, etc., as well as the transmission. Please keep this in mind as far as transport considerations. Also, all parts and literature noted in this listing are sold with the vehicle and will not be sold separately. 3.) The buyer is responsible for the transportation, as well as all costs related to the transportation of this vehicle. In addition, the buyer is responsible for all costs related to taxes, duties, customs and licensing fees, if applicable. If unsure of any fees or paper-work required, please check with your local authorities before you bid. I will supply the buyer with the Province of Ontario vehicle registration and a bill of sale upon receipt of full payment. 4.) Payment of this vehicle must be in the form of either a Money Order or Bank Draft (Cashier’s Check certified from a US or Canadian bank) in US funds. A deposit equal to 20% of the final bid price is required within 48 hours of auction close. Full payment required and transaction finalized within 7 days of auction close. As a point of reference, I am located in southern Ontario bordering on the city of Toronto which is about a 2 hour drive to Niagara Falls. Thank you for looking at my auction and good luck bidding!
