Vehicle Detail

This car is being relisted because the high bidder could not come up with the money to buy the car so here’s your second chance to grab this classic! This car is a good candidate for restoration. I have owned this car for the past 18 years and it has always been a joy to own and drive. I had originally planned to restore her back to her original beauty, but realistically I do not have the time so I would like to pass her onto someone who might be able to. Unfortunately the car has developed rust in all the typical places for these cars which is evident in the pictures. I will be very honest about the condition of this car because I don't want anyone to be surprised or disappointed upon picking it up. Body: Rust in all the usual 2002 places - see pictures. The car was originally Malaga (maroon), but was repainted red some time ago by the previous owner. The paint is faded and the clear coat has all peeled off. The car has never been in an accident other than parking lot dings so the chassis is dead straight. This is evident in how the car drives - it feels well centered and does not wander or pull. A new windshield and gasket were installed about 8 years ago. The floors are in okay shape with some surface rust with the exception of a hole under the gas pedal. A substitute hinge was added for the gas pedal. Rust Spots (to the best of my knowledge): · Rear edge of both front fenders · Front corners of each front fender above the turn signals · Lower corners of the front fenders · 2 spots on lower front nose panel · Lower rear quarter panels in the front and rear of the wheel · Rear wheel tubs inside trunk & lower in front of wheel on passenger side · Rear section of rocker panels · Spare Tire Well · Spot under gas pedal on floor · Inside front wheel wells behind wheel · Miscellaneous surface rust on body Interior: The backs of the front and back seat are in okay condition, but the bottoms have holes and are delaminating. The original horse hair pads have long since dried out and fallen through the springs. The rear side panels are in decent shape. The front door panels are okay, but the under board is soft along the bottoms. The dash is decent shape, but has the typical crack between the instruments and main dash pad. Engine: The engine runs fairly well and starts right up, but could use a rebuild. It does use some oil and leaks some as well. It has the E12 head with the larger valves and a Weber 38 DGAS carburetor. It also has a mechanical advance Ti distributor. It also has a Pertronix breakerless ignition setup installed in the distributor. Drivetrain: The transmission shifts okay, but needs new 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear synchros. It also has a bad layshaft bearing which makes noise until the car is shifted into fourth gear. The car was originally equipped with an automatic, but I converted it to a manual shortly after I bought the car. The rear differential and drive shaft are in good condition. Suspension: The suspension is pretty good condition with the exception of a bad wheel bearing on the rear driver's side. The front lower control arms and lower ball joints were replaced about five years ago. It also has Bilsteins in the front that were replaced about the same time. Brakes: The brakes work well in the car except for the parking brake which is a little weak. It could use some adjusting. Electrical: Has typical gage flutter which is most likely a weak ground. Wipers and lights work, but turn signals work intermittently. The battery does not hold a charge and needs to be replaced - currently starts with a jump. It has a radio, but it does not work because it is not hooked up. Climate Control: The car has a Behr air condition unit installed which was sourced from a '76 2002. The compressor however has been removed, but will be included with the car. The heater box blower fan does not work as is typical for these cars, because the fan motor is exposed to the weather. Other: There is no rear muffler on the car. The pipe leading into the muffler had rusted through so I removed the muffler. The center resonator is still there. As a result the car is fairly loud while running. I have tried to be as detailed and truthful as possible. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me with questions. I truly hope that a fellow 2002 enthusiast will take over stewardship of this classic BMW. Roundies are getting more rare every year so I think it is worthwhile to preserve the ones that are left. These cars are also steadily appreciating in value which makes them attractive for the long haul. Actual mileage is not known. Mileage shown is an estimate. The state of Connecticut does not issue titles for classic cars so there is no title. However the car has current vehicle registration. A bill of sale will be made up at the time of sale for vehicle ownership transfer. Good luck bidding! $250 deposit due within 24 hours of end of auction, no warranties implied or expressed, transportation is seller’s responsibility, I will try and assist. I could possibly deliver the car within 100 mile radius for $100 which would cover the cost of renting a trailer and gas as long as it is not in a city or congested area – please consult me with me to see if we could work something out. I reserve the option to refuse delivery based on destination or requested date and time.
