Vehicle Detail
Here's a classic, and one in great condition and with low miles. Not to sound cliched, but I hate to sell this bike; I'm only doing it to make room for a new (& bigger) Triumph. It's a 1982 Honda Nighthawk; original paint, original seat, original decals, pretty much original everything. It's the straight 4-cylinder 650cc engine; which starts easily and runs and idles at a nice, even rate. I bought this bike when gas was $4 a gallon, as a commuter/grocery getter, and it served me wonderfully, I'd just loop the pastic grocery bags over the sissy bar, and zoom! off I'd go. I'd keep it except that I wanted something I could take a longer trip on. The 650 runs great, but with me on it (I'm a pretty big fellow) getting it over 60 for an extended period makes me want something bigger. But around town, this bike is awesome, very lightweight with a fairly high center of gravity which makes it incredibly nimble (and fun) to ride. The straight 4 cyl fed into the 4-way pipes make the bike nice and quiet. It makes plenty of power and is VERY reliable. I have complete faith in this bike and would ride it anywhere, quite a statement considering it's nearly 30 years old. All around, this is a great bike, in really good condition, given its age. It was well taken care of by its previous owners (I bought it from the original owners, I believe, on eBay in Winston-Salem NC). I've had it a little over two years, and in that time, I've been stopped about 10 times..."Man, I had one just like that!", "That bike looks great for its age, man!" etc. etc., and one guy at the Circle K, in the first couple of months of my ownership, offered to buy it outright, as well as the guys at the repair shop where I had the brakes done last summer. It's not perfect, but it's not far from it, either. I love all things with engines, and keep good care of my vehicles and 'toys,' the Honda has never been dropped or fallen over, and as long as I had it I only got caught in the rain once (I was at the movies and it snuck up and rained while I was inside). Tires: new back tire last summer (about 2000 miles ago). Front tire will need replacing in 1000-1200 miles or so. Battery: New last summer, kept on battery tender when not ridden at least once a week (which was rare until last month, due to new bike) Seat: original Honda seat; comfortable, good stitching, minimum wear. Seat is more comfortable than my new Triumph (Grrr) Brakes: cabling checked and new brakes last summer (about 2000 miles ago) Mileage: I did mileage checks twice, once it came to 49.5 miles per gallon, the second time it was 50.2 miles per gallon. The fuel reserve switch works fine and is easy to reach while you're in motion, too. Chrome: good condition, only one tiny spot of rust where a bolt attaches to the package tray bar. I didn't even have the chance to polish it up for the pics; I just wiped her down with a damp rag, so the chrome would gleam even better with just a little more time put into her. Again, looks great for a 30yr old machine. Defects: I'll be as detailed as I can, for as far as I know, there aren't many. The top lights in the speedometer and RPM gauges are out -- still readable at night, but a little dim. Odometer and trip odometer work fine, but the trip odometer reset button doesn't work. One paint chip on tank, right side, about the size of a pencil point. The rubber piece on the shifter fell off during a ride; it shifts fine without it, so I never got around to replacing it. Does it leak oil, like most old bikes? A tiny bit. And when I say tiny, I mean like 4-5 drops a week. The shop that did the brakes last year said, and I quote, "She'll leak a tiny bit, but don't worry about it. It's cosmetic on a bike this old. Just check it every few months and top it off." Everything else works and looks great, even the locking gas cap. What is included: the motorcycle; original owner's manual w/details of all maintenence work done; a detailed, Chiltons-style workshop book; a brand new Harley battery tender with a cool little clip (that's the little plug you see by the helmet holder); two helmets (1 small, 1 lg/xlg) Location: Southwest Florida Shipping: I'd prefer you pick it up, but I'm a teacher, and this time of year I have enough time to deliver it anywhere in the state, as long as you pay for the gas for my F150. Payment: I'd prefer cash, cashier's check or money order, due within a week of the auction close. I'll take a personal check, but it will need time to clear the bank (7-10 days). The bike is listed locally as well, so unfortunately I have to reserve the right to end the auction early. Thanks, happy bidding, and good luck: it's a great find!
