Vehicle Detail

This is my 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350sl convertible with 4-speed automatic transmission and 4.5L V8. The folding soft top really needs new cloth and vinyl, but the mechanical linkages work great. I also have a black 1-piece hard top that I am including in this auction, which has some scrapes on it from being stored over the years. I don’t use either of these tops- the car is kept in my garage and is only driven in the sun. I am selling this car because the last time I had it out it developed a pressurized oil leak which I believe to be from the front of the left bank head gasket. I have a wedding coming up and I simply cannot afford to repair this at this time, so I am selling this car at a loss, either for someone with more free time to repair, or as a parts car. In the last year and a half I had a new fuel pump, lines and filter put in, with the tank drained and flushed (the car had sat and the gas had gone bad). At this time the oil was clear so it was simply replaced with a new filter. The car was also given four new tires and passed NY State inspection. The rear brake rotors, calipers and pads have been replaced since. This car had been running great for me, with the only hiccup being a sticky right front brake caliper, which I was planning on fixing when I had the time. The car did not leak oil before last week, never overheated and was stopped immediately after a leak was noticed to prevent damage. The only other issues with the car are that I cannot seem to get the windshield wipers to work (not that I care to either- again I never even use the tops), some rust in the floor pans noticed from below, and the cosmetic issue of a car which had been repainted many years ago and has some scratches and paint chips, although the scratches are not rusting. The interior is in strikingly good condition for a car of this age, with the only tear in the drivers side headrest, and the drivers door arm rest was removed many years ago and I have never been compelled to put it back on. It will be included along with the original antenna, which apprears to have been pulled out before the paint job. This is by no means a perfect car, but for someone with the time to devote to a few repairs, this car is a lot of fun and a great price, or it could be a source of many great parts for anyone in need of them. The car is still currently inspected and registered in NY, but off the road. Buyer will have to arrange pick up. Email me with any questions or if you want pictures of anything specific. Thank you. -Bob
