Here is the sweet story of an astonishing car- this beautiful original 1964 Lincoln Continental is finished in the very rare combination of Princeton Gray (Code C) with Silver Blue cloth and leather interior. It has covered just 26,897 original miles. It's been in my family for nearly twenty years. And we are only the third owners. Margaret and U. George Krapfel of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan purchased the Lincoln brand new from Frank Adam Lincoln-Mercury of Grosse Pointe Shores on May 14, 1964. At approximately the same time, a companion 1964 Thunderbird in Black with Silver Blue Cloth interior was purchased. He was seventy three years of age at the time, she was seventy-five. The cars were kept together in their neat white colonial garage on Grayton Road and wanted for nothing. As the Krapfels wintered in Florida, neither car was subject to winter weather. The Lincoln was returned to the dealer when it was just over two years old, in July of 1966, for the fitting of an Allegro Mark IV Air Conditioning system. The mileage on the car was 5,917! The receipt on was in Mrs. Krapfel's name, I suspect the Lincoln was primarily hers. The manual and warranty card for the Allegro are in the glove box, along with the owner's manual, certicard, warranty book, and miscellaneous instructions, such as an index card on how to use the AM/FM radio. All of these documents are original to the car along with the envelope they came in.Mrs. Krapfel passed away in 1975 and her husband in 1982. At that time, the Lincoln had just over 19,000 miles. The cars emerged from the white garage on Grayton Road and were acquired as a pair by a Ford collector near Detroit. They joined his stable of classic FoMoCo products and remained there until my father bought them, again as a pair, in the spring of 1991. The Lincoln had just over 24,000 miles at that time, the Thunderbird a bit higher at 33,000. Both were showroom new.Dad bonded with the Lincoln much more than with the Thunderbird, which was sold in 2000. I've always been sad that they didn't remain together. We showed the Lincoln at LCOC meets a few times in the 90's, including the 1996 75th Anniversary meet in Dearborn where it was awarded a First Place in Primary with 96.5 points- as an original car. He slowed down in his car collecting ways but the Lincoln was always the one which he held on to. Last year, he called and asked me to come get it. While always kept in indoor dry storage, it had not been started for a few seasons. I sent it to the restorer to be reawakened, it was he who found the valve train to be gummed up. The top of the engine including both heads came off, were disassembled, dipped and professionally restored. The lifters were replaced, as well as head gaskets and other components at his discretion. The result is a wonderfully smooth 430 that is ready to drive and enjoy. How is the Lincoln today? Having spent almost thirty of its forty-six years in collector's hands, it remains in almost time-capsule condition. There isn't a speck of rust, and I've even removed the rocker panel moldings to check. The body is rock solid. I estimate the paint at 75% original, there was one fender that was scraped in our possession and that all that was painted in the last twenty years. There is some mild patina on the upper surfaces from age and a few blemishes on each, you can show and present the car proudly as-is but you would want to refinish those if you want to return the car to LCOC competition. The sides are mirror straight. The chrome and stainless are lovely, with only the most minor patina from use, such as a few small nicks on the bumper ends. The rear anodizing looks like it was installed yesterday, but it is original. The rubber trim is all original and very good to excellent with only the most minor of aging. The tires are show-correct Goodyear Bias Ply 9.15x15 whitewalls- the exact correct original tire for this car. They are invaluable if you plan to show the car, but should be replaced with new if you plan to drive. I don't believe a radial tire has ever been fitted to this Continental. The engine compartment is mostly original and very clean, a bit of detailing was done in the 80's and this has held up very well. If you'd like to spend some time with your steel wool and detailing brush, you'll be right back in the hunt. I always got 4's with it. The trunk is clean and original. the 46 year old original fabric has some discoloration from the years, but as this fabric is thicker than the replacements on the market, so we elected not to replace it. The spare tire cover is original and excellent. Trunk floor is rock solid. The original jack appears unused. And then there's the interior- the Silver Blue cloth and leather interior. It's heavenly. That's the only word. The seats are lovely, the door panels are like new, the headliner is perfect, the rear carpets look like no shoe has ever touched them, the front carpets are excellent with the heel pad as intact as the day it was installed, the dash glows, the Allegro Mark IV Air conditioner looks like it was installed new this morning. The interior chrome is new. It's just flat out NEW. As lovely as the rest of the car is, the interior is just flat out gorgeous. Minor flexing of the leather on the driver's seat- as if the car were about six months old. Glowing, beautiful seatbelts. All of the instruments and controls look and operate as new except right rear window and clock are asleep. AM/FM works. Rear speaker works. Power antenna works. Power door locks work. "Door Ajar" light works, "High Beam" indicator works, vacuum locks work, Allegro Air Conditioning works in all modes but is tepid. Runs and drives beautifully, the engine is so smooth you'll wonder if it is running while waiting at traffic lights. Shifts beautifully, brakes have just been serviced and adjusted. Exhaust system is quiet, it is stainless steel installed in the late 90s'. All in all a pleasure to drive.
