Vehicle Detail

In the wonderful days of yore, before the alien Dark Lord SUV descended from Outer Space and took over the planet, Mommies and Daddies drove smart, sensible, stylish V8 powered full sized sedans. They featured long silhouettes, sculptured sides, powerful engines, and roomy interiors for six stylishly dressed passengers. The smartest versions featured pillarless hardtop styling and were often dressed up with stylish vinyl covered roofs. Instead of numeric gibberish on their flanks, they had glamorous names like Galaxie, Impala, Le Sabre, Fury, Monterey and Polara. They were nice cars and were bought by nice families. In this case, the story is almost as sweet as the car. Mrs. Betty Alhiser of West Covina, CA went into Norm King Dodge in Glendora on February 16, 1971, to select a new family sedan. Her husband Walter was not with her that day, which was unusual in 1971. By the time the day was through. Mrs. Alhiser drove out in a sensible but smart 1971 Polara Custom Four Door Hardtop. She chose her options carefully, making sure she had enough to be comfortable without getting too carried away. Her new Polara came with the Light Group, Power Front Disc Brakes, Torque Flite Transmission, 383 V8 with 2 bbl carb., Tinted Glass, Left Remote Mirror, Air Conditioning. Electric Clock, Variable Wipers, undercoating, Bumper Guards, NOx Control (required in CA), Radio, Power Steering, G78-15 WSW tires, and a vinyl roof. So she got all the essentials. For color she chose the popular Medium Green Poly with dark green vinyl roof and dark green fabric and vinyl interior. What makes a person bond to a car so tightly that they never part with it? I can't say but this car was acquired from her estate sale in 2003, still parked in the same garage it was first brought home to. It now has 98,000 miles and looks and drives like the very well maintained car that it is. We don't have all the service records, but the file is complete from 1995-forward, and all in her name (perhaps this is when her husband passed on?) Anyway, if I told you it had 40,000 miles it would seem about right. It's amazingly well preserved. Excellent original paint over nice, straight, rust free sides. No signs of damage or repainting. Nice and glossy, like Dodge built it back in '71. Great chrome and brightwork, very nice original vinyl roof with one spot of rust in the right rear corner- see photo. Minor, but I wanted you to see it. Any car about to have it's 40th birthday is allowed some minor patina. Interior is very nice indeed- dash and door panels glow, even the original carpets look great. No cracks anywhere. Some minor wear to fabric on driver's seat, rest of the seats look new. Again, only minor patina. Headliner is great, instrument panel looks terrific (clock is asleep), just a nice Polara everywhere you look. Even the trunk is very clean. The 383 starts right up and sounds great. She shifts great goes down the road straight as a big Dodge should. Radial tires are older but have good tread. A/C blows cold. Her service records show she took very good care of it. I'd probably freshen up the fluids before I set out on a trek, but again it sounds sweet and drives great. I'm assisting a longtime friend in reducing the size of his collection, and that means some nice cars like this one are going to find new homes. We've placed a very reasonable reserve on this car and I think it will be some time before another one this nice comes along. If you'd like a remarkably clean example of a great American highway cruiser, your Dodge is waiting. European buyers will get an especially good deal with the favorable exchange rates. I can assist with port delivery at a reasonable price. The car is in Yucca Valley, CA, just north of Palm Springs. You are welcome to inspect it yourself or have it inspected, please email me for an appointment or with any questions you may have. Blue plates, original frames, and memories of many happy miles with Betty are included with purchase. Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
