Vehicle Detail
Thanks for coming to check out this listing! I’ve got an excellent feedback reputation as a seller on eBay, and you can bid with confidence on my auctions. Shown here is a 1986 Dodge Diplomat Police Interceptor. It was car #2 (of 2) from the Britt, Iowa Police Department back in the late ‘80s and early 1990s. I was told by the previous owner (who bought it at auction from the Britt P.D. some years ago) that it has the Police Special 318 cubic inch V8 with 360 heads, and that all of the “lean-burn” stuff was removed, & replaced with a standard 4-barrel carburetor and conventional electronic ignition for much better performance and reliability. Mopar could never get that lean-burn junk to work right… it was a bad idea from its inception. The interior on this car is in amazingly good shape, and has the certified 150mph police speedometer. The car was re-painted about 10 years ago the factory color (I would call it a dark periwinkle blue). It’s an attractive color, and is still glossy & presentable. There is no rust showing on the body, except for a very tiny amount of bubbling behind the driver’s side rear wheelwell down at the bottom of the quarter panel. The front bumper is nice, but the rear bumper has some rust in it, and is pushed in a little on the driver’s side (from the previous owner backing into a tree in the yard). The driver’s side taillight lense has a minor hole/crack down low. Also, the front corner marker light assembly & surround is broken on the driver’s side of the grill. As you can see in some of the shots, there are wash swirls and a few chips & scratches here and there, but nothing major (the paint job would look fabulous with a fine compound buff-job). The body is very straight & free of dents! The car runs and drives just great (transmission operates firmly & smoothly with no mushy shifts). As happened on so many police cars (from executing lots of U-turns), the driver’s side upper ball joint is apparently worn out, and in need of replacement. The previous owner has been driving the car this way for some time now, but it needs to be tended to as the tire is leaning in at the top. I've driven the car all around town and on a 30 mile trip thus far with no issues for what that's worth. The tires are okay, but not in the best shape (& mismatched). The left rear rim is a spare, and doesn’t match the others, but I have all 4 factory Mopar police interceptor vented wheels and hubcaps. These are a bit rare, and I wanted to be sure the buyer knew I’ve got the complete set to go with the car. I believe the rear axle is the Chrysler 8 & ¾” limited-slip unit (as came standard with most police interceptor cars). I tested it out, and it does spin both rear tires when you power-brake it, so it's "posi". The interior is in really nice shape, and doesn’t exhibit signs of a "cage" being installed in the car (the headliner and door-pillar post interior plastic are not notched or cut up) like on many ex-police cars. The speedometer works, but its bulb for night-time illumination is burned out, and a couple of the other gauges are not currently working. To my amazement, the Air Conditioning actually still works, too (blows cold)! The charging system works fine (has the high amp police alternator). All the headlights and taillights work. The horn works intermittently. The dome light comes on when you open the driver’s door. The cigarette lighter doesn’t work. There is a factory Mitsubishi am/fm cassette deck with graphic equalizer and all the bells & whistles for it’s day (remember the “DiamondStar” merger?). The driver's seatbelt was replaced with one from another car, and is red insetad of tan (could be dyed with vinyl and carpet spray dye). The odometer reads 75,507 miles, but is not a million mile odometer, so it is probably actually 175k miles. The rubber pads on the gas and brake pedals don’t exhibit excessive wear (for what that’s worth). Please note: for demonstration purposes, I photographed the car with a suction-cup flashing red light the roof that plugs into the cigarette lighter, as well as a police spotlight sitting on the driver’s door & a night-stick on the front seat, but these 3 items are not included with the sale of this car. There was once a hole drilled in the driver’s side windshield-pillar for a spotlight, but it was filled in at the time the car was re-painted (could be drilled out once again if you wished to re-install a spotlight)... there’s still a hole on the tan, plastic interior trim where you can see that a spotlight used to be. I remember spending copious numbers of hours watching episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard with my Great Grandfather as a young kid. I think they used some Dodge Diplomats and Plymouth Furys of this body-style towards the end of the run of that show (it aired from1979-1985). It would be a hoot to get a magnetic or vinyl decal which read “City of Hazzard…Official Use Only”. My dad was also a sheriff deputy in the little town I grew up in during the mid ‘80s, and I remember liking the Mopar police cars back then. He always said the Dodges & Plymouths were far better police cars than the Ford Fairmonts and Chevy Novas our local department had back then. Their engines made more power and the Mopars had better brakes as well. I have honestly and accurately described everything I know about the car, but should you think of any questions not already answered in this description, or would like to come inspect the car & take it for a joyride, you may call me at (641) 512-5229. Thanks for looking! I have clear title (in hand) currently registered in my name for this vehicle. I would be happy to scan it and send it to the buyer. By bidding on this auction (or agreeing to purchase this vehicle), you acknowledge that it is being sold As Is with no warranty. I require a non-refundable $150.00 security deposit via PayPal or money order within 5 days of auction’s end, and require that the vehicle be paid for in full within 10 days of auction’s end. If coming to pick the car up in person, I ask that you bring cash for payment, otherwise, if having it shipped with an auto carrier, a cashier’s check made out to myself: Jason Stone is acceptable. I can store the car for a reasonable amount of time, but please ask before bidding. At any rate: I do require full payment within 10 days of auction’s end (regardless of whether the vehicle’s been picked up or not). Thank you for your understanding & cooperation. Diplomat Police InterceptorIf you intend to have this vehicle shipped with an auto carrier, I've had very good luck with Atlas Auto Shippers (888) 285-2706. They are very competitive on price, and can give you a quote over the phone. I live at 1719 S. Coolidge Ave., Mason City, IA 50401 for reference sake.On May-11-10 at 14:39:40 PDT, seller added the following information: I should mention, that the car also comes with a new fuel pump. I also noticed a few more things that should be mentioned. There's a rock chip in the windshield, and a little rust in the door jamb of the back door. Also the rubber floor mat is torn in the back seat. The driver's side rear door outside handle has come unhooked, so it only opens from the inside.
