Buick first used the Riviera name in 1949 for a pillar-less hardtop. The name was used on several other models through the 1950’s. To compete with the increasing popularity of “personal luxury” cars like the Ford Thunderbird, Buick built the gorgeous 1963 Riviera, styled by the legendary Bill Mitchell of GM Styling. The new Riviera lasted through 1965 when a redesign brought out a less radical, but ultimately more popular version that lasted from 1966-1970. The second generation Riviera was typical of the “personal luxury” cars that had such success at the time. Cars like the Riviera, Thunderbird, Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and Oldsmobile Toronado all shared the long hood, short rear deck look, two doors, a rather cramped rear seat and massive engines. The original Riviera came standard with a 401 cu. in. V-8 with a 425 cu. in. available as an option. 1964 even offered the option of a second four barrel carb. The Grand Sport option first appeared on the Riviera in 1965 with a 360 hp. 425 cu. in. V-8. For 1966 the 401 was dropped and the 425 became standard. 1967-69 saw a new 430 cu. in engine as standard with the GS version providing a top speed of 130 mph, very impressive for such a large and heavy car. The car was re-designed for the final year of this body with fixed headlights mounted in the grille and fender skirts for the first time. A new, standard engine of 455 cu. in. provided 370 hp. and a massive 510 ft. lbs. of torque. Acceleration times of 0-60 in 7.9 sec. were very decent for a two-ton “personal car.” Technical Information: Engine Type: OHV, V8 Displacement: 455 Cubic Inches Horsepower: 370 @ 4600 RPM Transmission Type: 3 Speed Automatic Wheelbase: 119 Inches Weight: 4,216 Pounds Production Information: Original List Price: $4,854 Number Produced: 37,336 You are bidding on the 1970 Buick Riviera GS below. Fresh out of storage we have a solid Riviera 455 Grand Sport ready for a new owner's TLC. The car looks as if it was restored at some point but then sat for a long period of time. The body of this classic Rivy is very straight and free of body rot. There are no major dents and there is no evidence of major accidents. While there is the typical surface rust underneath the car there is no evidence of rot or rust repair. While the pale green metallic paint is no longer perfect it still looks nice from a few feet away. It has some small bubbles throughout due to poor paint preparation and some chips here and there. The car's interior is in very good condition although it will need a good cleaning. It has a musty smell from long term storage. There are no major rips or tears to the seats, doors panels, or headliner. The car retains its original 455ci V8 engine. It spins over freely when a battery is added. It has no spark to the coil so a road test could not be performed. As such the original 3 speed automatic transmission has not been tested either. The car DOES NOT run and it will need to be towed. Glass throughout the car is in good condition being free of cracks or chips. The car is equipped with power windows. The car features Buick Rally wheels at all four corners. They are wrapped in period correct skinny white wall tires that have a good amount of tread life left on them. The cars brakes seem to be in working order but were not able to be tested at speed. Other features of the car include... Factory Air Conditioning Factory Cruise Control Power Steering Tilt Steering Column Power Brakes Finned Aluminum Front Brake Drums Aftermarket AM/FM Cassette Player Stereo Amplifier Dual 6x9 Sony Speakers Shoulder Harness Seat Belts After Market Oil and Temperatures Gauges Dual Exhaust w/ Glass-Packs Original Bumper Jack Overall, this is a solid complete project car. It could be on the road with a bit of work and some TLC. Feel free to email any questions and check out the numerous pics we have up for your viewing pleasure. A clear California title is on hand and the car is free of liens or back fees. The odometer reads 1,441 miles but the car's actual mileage is believed to be 101,441.
