GMC trucks were the result of “Billy” Durant’s frenzy of buying independent auto and truck manufacturers to create his automotive giant, General Motors. In 1909 Durant bought both the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and the Reliance Motor Car Company, each of which had been producing commercial trucks. The two were merged within GM in 1911, and by 1912 the GMC Truck name appeared at the New York International Auto Show. Early trucks, including GMC models, were rather crude affairs with hard rubber tires, often open cabs, low geared (often with chain drive) and built strictly for commercial use. The idea of owning a light duty truck for personal daily use was not yet on the horizon. Of course with time the trucks evolved with more power, more comfort and convenience for the driver and passenger. Following WWII, in which GMC had played a major role in providing trucks for the war effort, a redesign called “Advanced Design” changed the appearance of GMC and Chevrolet trucks. Cabs became wider for more interior comfort, windows were enlarged, and the center-hinged hood of the earlier models was replaced with a cowl hinged conventional hood. Pod mounted headlights that had earlier been perched on the front fenders were replaced with headlights smoothly incorporated into the front fenders. The front sheetmetal blended the wider hood and fenders together and incorporated a wider horizontal grille. The “Advanced Design” models were well received and moved light duty trucks further into personal transport and non-commercial use. Technical Information: Engine Type: OHV Inline Six Cylinder Displacement: 248 Cubic Inches Horsepower: 100 @ 3300 RPM Transmission Type: 3 Speed Manual Wheelbase: 116 Inches Weight: 3800 Pounds Production Information: Original List Price: $1,600 You are bidding on the 1953 GMC Pickup Truck below. This fun little pickup truck is mostly original with some minor upgrades. The truck runs, drives, and handles very well. The truck looks and runs as if many parts have been replaced and rebuilt over the years. The body of this California truck is straight and free of body rot. The older green paint job has some character here and there as the truck has been enjoyed and driven. Please view the pics and see the straight lines, tight body fit, and rot free undercarriage for yourself. The truck's original 248ci straight six engine fires right up and idles well. It does not smoke or miss and has good power when accelerating. The original three speed on the column (3 on the tree) transmission shifts smoothly through its gears. Overall; the engine, tranny, and rear-end look and feel like they have been rebuilt at some point as this truck is a dream to drive compared to an un-touched truck of its age. The truck handles very well as the steering box is tight and free of play or bump steer. The brakes are currently in good working order. The stock bench seat has been re-upholstered and the shade compliments the trucks paint job. These old trucks didn't have much in the way of interior and this truck is still that way. A later model heater was added and a nice job was done with mounting the controls etc. Another added creature comfort is the AM/FM cassette player mounted under the dash. The truck's glass is in good condition and is free of cracks or chips. The door windows roll up and down smoothly. These trucks didn't come with a lot of chrome back in their day and this one is no exception. The chrome is does have is reserved for the bumpers, which are straight and shiny. Stock 16 inch steel wheels are at all four corners featuring dog dish GMC hub caps and beauty rings. The wheels are wrapped in period correct heavy duty black wall truck tires. The tires on the front look almost new while the rear tires look old but have tread life left on them. The 12 volt electrical system is currently in working order. All of the truck's lights and signals are working and the charging system is working as well. The truck features the correct matching Folsom State Prison made black and yellow California license plates. Overall, this truck is running, driving, and registered. It could make a good driver or a very solid restoration project. A clear California title is on hand. The truck is registered for the road in California and is free of liens or back fees. The odometer reads about 54k miles but the truck's actual mileage is not known.
