Almond Beige (code 3A) exterior with matching vinyl roof and Mocha Brown Metallic trim (code 4B) Beige interior with beige/plaid upholstery 258 CID inline six-cylinder engine Three-speed automatic transmission Air-conditioning, cruise control, power steering, power brakes, tilt column Radio delete model Here’s a seldom seen car, a 1984 AMC Eagle four-door sedan. This is a true survivor vehicle that was simply ahead of its time. While all-wheel-drive is commonplace on many vehicles today, in 1980, it was confined to Subarus, Jeeps, trucks and vans. This example was built in AMC’s factory in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Finished in Almond Beige (code 3A) exterior with Mocha Brown Metallic trim (code 4B) is in overall very good order, with some roof blemishes under the vinyl that are visible upon close inspection. The windows are clear and intact while the sedan’s lights are haze-free and look great. The car’s bodywork is straight and solid, the bumpers fit well to the body, the engine bay is tidy, the battery looks new and the cargo area is in good order. The car rolls on General Grabber AT2 tires, size 205/75R15 at all four corners. The wheels and tires are in decent condition. The drivetrain consisted of one engine, the 258 CID straight-6-cylinder, in conjunction with a version of Chrysler’s A998 three-speed automatic transmission and Dana 30 and Dana 35 differentials. All 1980 Eagles came standard with a permanent four-wheel-drive system that employed a New Process 119 transfer case that had a viscous fluid coupling that allowed the four-wheel-drive system to operate on wet or dry pavement without causing undue suspension and drivetrain wear. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning (though it does not blow cold), power steering, power front disc and rear drum brakes, cruise control, a rear window defroster and a tilt column. Inside, the front bench seats, colored tan with plaid inserts, with its wide cushions and integrated headrests, and rear bench seats are in great shape. The tan carpet is in a similar state while the headliner is in satisfactory order. The original two-spoke steering wheel has a Jeep fashion cover for the rim but the horn is inoperable. The instrument panel with its splashes of wood veneer to convey warmth and inner door panels are in overall very good order. Curiously, this sedan was ordered with no radio, despite its other conveniences. Reportedly, the previous owner bought this car from a classic car museum in St. Louis, Missouri, which needed more space. The former owner flushed out the fuel tank and lines, installed a new water pump, flushed the radiator, installed new spark plugs and wires and changed a few vacuum lines. For 1984, the popular 258 CID straight six was optional in place of the 150 CID AMC inline four-cylinder. The Select Drive all-wheel-drive system was redesigned to allow shift-on-the-fly. (Prior model-year Eagles required two hands to operate the shifting switch, making it difficult, if not impossible, to change while the car was in motion.) For a long time, American Motors played a distant fourth fiddle to the other three Detroit-based motor corporations but even with its limited budget compared to the Big Three, AMC tried to do things differently. From little things like its own style of flip-up exterior door handles to models like the Eagle, AMC preferred to march to the beat of its own drummer. Competition to this AMC in 1984 included Buick’s Skylark four-door sedan, Chevrolet’s Citation four-door hatchback, Dodge’s Aries four-door sedan, Ford’s Tempo four-door sedan, Honda’s Accord sedan, Mercury’s Topaz four-door sedan, Nissan’s Stanza four-door hatchback, Oldsmobile’s Omega four-door sedan, Plymouth’s Reliant four-door sedan, Pontiac’s Phoenix four-door hatchback, Subaru’s GL four-door sedan and Toyota’s Camry four-door sedan. If you seek a survivor car, a model that is rarely seen today yet will make other people point, smile and stop to ask questions, this is one of those cars.
