My Superhawk is one of only about 900 made in 1962, and is only the 25th Superhawk made that year. It has about 3700 original miles. At about 2300 miles the bike was stored for decades. It was rescued, and I’ve put about 1400 miles on it since the resurrection. It runs great and is currently registered with a correct 1956 California plate. This extremely rare bike is a genuine 1962 Superhawk but it was made so early in the run that it has many unobtanium 1961 features, such as: •aluminum front fender•“halo” speedometer mount•flat steel front and rear brake arms•small taillight•hollow rear axle•steering lock without cover•early “diamond” style grips•black rear brake cable•black tachometer cable•black speedometer cable•short rear brake pedal A prominent local Honda 305 expert resurrected my bike from near oblivion. It was disassembled down to every nut and bolt, refreshed mechanically, and reassembled. The original patina was preserved, although some parts were spray painted for now. The work included: •NOS early style high compression pistons & rings (has 160 lbs. compression now in each side)•new valves•new primary chain•new cam chain•fourth gear swap to make third and fourth gear closer ratio•original speedometer & tachometer disassembled, cleaned and serviced. Works perfectly.•correct NOS zinc plated spokes laced to the original hubs & rims in both wheels•new seat cover•new drive chain•original swing arm bushings serviced•original steering head bearings serviced•new fork seals•new correct NOS grey throttle, clutch and front brake cables•new battery My Superhawk is currently registered in my name here in California in the Year of Manufacture program. It has a legit 1956 California motorcycle plate and 1962 sticker! My bike comes with the honest to goodness original Ohtsu tires, which are in surprisingly good shape. So I could ride safely I removed them and installed new front and rear Cheng Shin tires with tread patterns that match the original tires. The replacement rear tire is mostly worn out though. Early Superhawks have 2 amp alternators, as opposed to the 1 amp alternators used in later models. I updated the system with a Charlie’s Place voltage regulator. This both takes advantage of the 2 amp charging capacity and yields a nice, stable voltage. No more boiled dry batteries. The original ignition points proved to be troublesome so I upgraded my bike with a Charlie’s Place electronic ignition setup. This is the first time I’ve installed one and I’m a believer now. My bike starts instantly, idles better, and feels more powerful throughout the rpm range. My Superhawk is a solid runner that I’ve put about 1300 miles on since the rebuild – including two trips to Death Valley. However, being a 56 year old bike there are still a few things to sort out: •tach cable drive leaks a bit (I didn’t want to remove the rare original black cable, but the seal is very tired.)•oil filter cover seeps a bit (A new gasket should do the trick)•rear wheel trued (I can’t tell while riding but it is slightly out of round.)•new rear tire•horn fixed (The switch and wiring are good, but the horn isn’t inclined to work.)•voltage regulator mount braced with a piece of foam or something (It will take a while to break, but I just noticed that the tab the regulator is mounted to shakes at some rpms.)
