Vehicle Detail
RESERVE LOWERED 1960 BMW R50 This is a near 60 year old motorcycle which has lived through many owners/care takers. I will share what I know about the bike and its past. I purchased this bike in early 2017 from an Estate Sale. The Previous Owner passed away and his brother was selling the bike. Bike had been sitting in a barn for 5-6 years or more. With some work onsite, it started and ran (roughly) when I originally looked at it. Rode it around the farm before I bought it. The Previous Owner (PO) set this up and painted it as a WW2 German Wehrmacht Here (WW2 German Army) Motorcycle might have looked. Paint is an amateur job - looks good from 10 feet; you see a few runs in the paint up close. PO also installed Mikuni Carbs some time during his ownership. Two Bing Carbs and Air Tubes will come with the bike so you could rebuild them and install them if desired. Also original Hella Bar End Signals included. They need a rebuild too. Have a spare clutch cable and Drive Boot Rubber. (I will work with buyer to possibly ship the carbs, Hellas, etc. separately from the bike.) Glove box functions but a key was broken off in the lock sometime back. I use a short screwdriver to open/close it. Period Accessory - Cigarette Lighter - installed in the headlight bucket. It is not wired up. PO had setup rear light with a single wire and single filament bulb - works as Brake Light only. Front lights are not wired up. Speedometer functions and is accurate. Odometer works. Trip odometer works. Original Denfield Seat. New Petcock. Replacement parts are from mostly from Max BMW. (Awesome Parts Fiche online and rapid service.) Electrical system is “a Redneck Mis-Mash” but works. Insert the key straight down to activate the ignition. Turn on Petcock. Prime kick it once or twice with Mikunis both on Choke Setting, Turn on the Ignition, Kick it and it starts. Release Choke as it warms up. Mufflers have a nice BARK to them without being “Harley Loud”. I changed fluids, put in new plugs & plug wires, checked the points (were OK). Removed the oil pan, cleaned it out, installed a new gasket and re-installed it. Set the intake / exhaust valves to 6 & 8 thousands. Re-jetted the Mikunis, changed the needle levels. New Front Brake Shoe Linings, Springs, etc. by Vech @ Bench Mark Works (great guy - super helpful to the BMW community). Stops well. New HEIDENAU K34 VINTAGE tires front and back and New Metzler tubes from MAX. New Rim Strips. New magnetic drain plugs on motor & transmission. New 6 Volt Battery. Replaced the Differential Gasket Set (part # 3300 0008 420 @ Max BMW) to correct a leak there when I originally test rode it. I have put about 600 miles on it - mostly with my Vintage Motorcycle Club. Runs all day long at 60 MPH. Not a show bike or trailer queen, but a rider you will be proud of. Couple of rock chips as you would expect on any bike that is ridden. Ride it as is or Restore it. Your choice. Only reason I am selling it is that when I ride Vintage, I want to ride my R90/2 Hot Rod (not for sale, at least not less than $30K) and do not need/want another Vintage Bike. Clear Ohio Title in my name. Buyer agrees to $1,000.00 deposit through PayPal at conclusion of Auction and Balance to be paid by Wire Transfer to seller’s bank within 5 days of Auction close. I will FedEx Title, etc. when funds clear. Buyer may elect to pick up the R50 @ seller location north of Cincinnati in Ohio, USA. Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs (bike and possibly a separate parts box) and all related insurances. Also available locally as “Best Offer”. I will attempt to answer any questions you may have. All questions/answers will be published here on eBay. Good Luck Bidding ! On Dec-10-17 at 09:08:54 PST, seller added the following information: I had a question about Slinger Service: I have no information on whether Slinger Service has been performed. On Dec-10-17 at 14:59:49 PST, seller added the following information: Question about International Buyers: I am interested in the bike going to someone who will enjoy it. I have sold Vintage motorcycles to collectors in Switzerland, Japan, Australia as well as US & Canada. This bike started it's journey in Germany and now resides in Ohio, USA. Next stop ??? Should you win, Shipping can be arranged by you. Bid Away. On Dec-11-17 at 05:25:37 PST, seller added the following information: Had a question on tires: HEIDENAU 3.50 x18 front and rear purchased from Max BMW. New Metzler Tubes. New Rim Strips. Tires have approximately 600 miles on them. On Dec-11-17 at 09:17:16 PST, seller added the following information: Had a question about a "Fly and Ride" A: I would not "Fly and Ride" this bike from Cincinnati to North Carolina in the winter. I believe the bike would make it, but weather would be a big risk. Longest ride I took was a 230-240 mile day ride with my club. We tend to ride about 55 MPH on back roads and stop to fill up the Indians at about 90 miles. Leisurely day. If you are the successful bidder eBay has several shippers they recommend that you could contact. Or you could do a One Way Rent from Uhaul - pickup a trailer in Cincinnati and return it in North Carolina. You can check costs online for either option. On Dec-13-17 at 08:18:48 PST, seller added the following information: Created a you tube video of starting the bike with cold engine. https://youtu.be/Z_yY4WYgKf8 Also a question about the side stand. I will post a photo. Probably not original, but I am not a BMW expert. Just a guy who likes Vintage Bikes and cars. On Dec-14-17 at 17:21:13 PST, seller added the following information: Had an eBay bidder ask me for my "number". I will not give anyone my "number". This is an Aucion which will run to completion. Please feel free to bid. Thanks
