Vehicle Detail
1968 AMC AMX This 1968 AMC AMX has spent its life in Northern California with three owners. It is an early-production Go Package car that is powered by the top of the line 390ci V8 backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. Only 6,725 AMX were built in 1968. Purchased in 1995 with 39k miles and used sparingly since, with just over 41k miles now indicated. Recent work includes a brake overhaul with a new master cylinder, brake booster and rubber lines. The suspension was also freshened with new rubber along with a new exhaust and fresh tires. Originally shipped from Kenosha with Scarab Gold paint and black stripes, the car was reportedly painted black by the dealership when new in order to satisfy customer demands resulting from a black car being used in the promotional literature. Go Package cars came with the optional dual racing stripes as well as Magnum 500 wheels, here wearing the correct original AMC center caps and a new set of BFGoodrich redlines. Both bumpers have been rechromed and other bright trim is in great condition. Early-production hoods lacked the reinforcements of later hoods, and this one is beginning to show signs of stress on the sides of the inner structure about five inches back from the front edge. The windshield and side glass wear a factory tint. The two-seater retains its black interior. Original 1968 non-headrest reclining bucket seats are covered in the leather optional for later cars rather than the stock Ventiliar vinyl offered in '68. Period loop carpeting is fitted throughout, the door panels and the ribbed headliner are crisp and original. A factory wood-look steering wheel is fitted, and recessed gauges include an early 120 mph speedometer rather than the 140 mph version fitted to later cars. Other early features include coarse-weave seat belts and a standard floor shifter rather than the Hurst unit provided starting in 1969. The factory AM radio has been refreshed with a new speaker and antenna. The number plaque reads 00464 and is found in the early location on the glovebox door rather than on the center dash. American Motors’ 390ci V8s were equipped with forged internals from the factory as well as four-barrel carburetors for original ratings of 315 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque. Painted in Caravelle metallic blue, this example is paired to a factory Borg Warner T10 4-speed manual transmission. The Go Package included a heavy duty radiator and cooling system, and a fresh dual exhaust system has recently been fitted. The Twin Grip positraction rear end is equipped with 4.10 gears rather than its original 3.54 setup. The Go Package included power disc brakes and stiffer suspension with heavy duty leaf springs. The trunk features an original space-saver spare and inflator bottle as well as the factory-style vinyl liner. The original owners manual and a service manual are included along with records dating to 1995. Sold with a clean California title. More photos and videos available upon request. Family first. The videos are on YouTube. Just type in 'AMX Walkaround' and 'AMX On Ramp' and they should be the first options after a YouTube site search. All systems go. Other work not listed above includes recored radiator and new heavy duty rear leaf springs from Detroit Eaton. Over the past few years it has also gotten a new alternator, a new water pump, thermostat, sensors, shocks, horns, and all the maintenance and tuning you do to enjoy an old car. The car has never sat for more than a month over the past 22 years. The engine is strong and has proven reliable. The torque will put a smile on your face. Compression test reads 165-180psi dry across the cylinders. More photos available. Any questions call 415-359-5577
