The SL HistoryIn the Spring of 1971 the 280 SL "Pagoda" was replaced by a brand new development - the 350 SL. Stylistically showing only a slight resemblance to the outgoing model the body and chassis design featured numerable advances in passive safety. Like its predecessor the 350 SL was a two-seater with a fully retractable roadster soft top and a removable hardtop. However the model represented a broader departure from an uncompromising sports car to a more comfortable yet powerful luxury two-seater. First available only with a 3.5-liter V-8 engine and ultimately culminating in the 5.6 liter V-8 560 SL- this extremely popular series remained in production until 1989- more than 18 years after the first 350 SL.
