1972 DETOMASO PANTERA – “ EXCEPTIONAL ORIGINAL CAR ” - MUST SELL _______________________________________________________________________________ HISTORY OF ALL DETOMASO PANTERAS The car made its public debut in Modena in March 1970 and was presented at the 1970 New York motor show a few weeks later. In 1971 after that production the Pantera started finding its way to America and production began at only 3 cars per day. The Pantera was designed by American designer tom Tjaarda and replaced the de Tomaso Mangusta. Unlike the Mangusta, which employed a steel backbone chassis, the Pantera was a steel monocoque design, the first instance of De Tomaso using this construction technique. The Pantera logo included a version of Argentina’s flag turned on its side with a t-shaped symbol. Panteras are powered by a Ford 351 cu in (5.8 l) V8 engine that produced 330 hp (246 KW; 335 PS). This high torque provided by the ford engine reduced the need for excessive gear changing at low speeds. The transmission and axle are combined in a ZF transaxle and power-assisted four wheel disc brakes |and rack and pinion steering were all standard equipment on the Pantera. Ghia's Tom Tjarda designed the styling and look of the Pantera body. Tjarda previously created the body-styles of the Ferrari 365 GT, fiat 124 Spider and the Mercedes 230 SL. The design of the Pantera body was influenced by the Lamborghini Miura. Giampaolo Dallara, the engineer in charge of the Pantera’s structural design, helped develop the Miura. The Pantera's pointed nose, wedge-shaped body with flared fender wells and hide-away headlights gave it an aggressive, streamlined look. The rear deck wing spoiler was optional. The 1970s Pantera used the Ford GT 40's limited-slip design, five-speed ZF transaxle with a 4.22:1 final drive ratio. The car's 11 inch clutch employed a hydraulic master and slave cylinder. The car has Independent suspension, rack and pinion steering and four wheel power disc brakes. The Pantera was considered luxurious when compared to most European sports cars. Amenities such as air-conditioning, full instrumentation and electric windows appealed to drivers on both sides of the Atlantic. The acceleration was 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) 5.5 seconds maximum. The American version has larger tail lamps and corner marker lamps. Late in 1971, ford began importing Panteras for the American market to be sold through its Lincoln mercury dealers. HISTORY OF MY 1972 DETOMASO PANTERA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Virtually everything about this car is “original” so if you want a customized creation with changes and add-ons, this is car is not it, this car is for someone who wants a virtually perfect "original" car. History of my Car This is a very exceptional car as you can see from every picture, the fantastic condition of the original interior and the beautiful body and paint. I’m anticipating a lot of interest because I have spent a lot of time and money making it as perfect as possible. I’m confident that most of the buyers who are looking for an exceptional car will recognize the quality of this two year restoration. The true original mileage of the car is 52,192 miles. The engine is new and was rebuilt last year as you can see from the pictures. In the interest of perfection the transmission (transaxle) was removed, inspected, adjusted and reassembled at the same time along with a new clutch. They both have less than 20 miles on them since all the work was done. This exceptional car that handles beautifully, it's very fast, and everything is virtually perfect. The car shifts beautifully in all 5 forward gears including and reverse and it’s great fun to drive. The only reason I’m selling this car is for financial reasons. My plans were to take it to car shows on the weekends. I wanted it to keep it forever but I must sell it now. The car has less than 20 miles since its meticulous restoration after being stored for a long time. Wheels and Tires The wheels are all original and tires are all brand new. The rear tires are P295 X 50 X15, the front tires are P225 x 50 X15 and have less than 20 miles on them. Some pictures still have remnants of the manufacturers tire stickers on the tread that have not worn off, as the tires are still so new. Drive Train ZF Transaxle shifts beautifully in all gears and the shift gate is precise. Every gear change is smooth with perfect synchronization on downshifting too. Brakes All the calipers have been freshly rebuilt with all new brake pads, new flexible steel braided brake lines and the car has a brand new master cylinder. The rotors have all been resurfaced, and all the wheel bearings have all either been replaced or serviced and repacked with fibrous grease. Suspension All of the suspension has been removed and serviced or replaced such as the ball joints as you can see from the pictures. Everything has been inspected and found to be in good working order or it has been removed and replaced including the shocks and the springs and the sway bars etc. Mechanical and Electrical Virtually everything in the car works well and everything has been refurbished or replaced as described in this overview. The steering from lock to lock is smooth with no noise or tightness and is virtually effortless. The steering wheel is original is in perfect condition and feels great. The electrical system is has no shorts and all of the original system is in great condition and everything works well. Interior and Trim The interior is all original and the hand stitched leather seats and interior leather is great and has been well taken care of, and it’s still like new, as you can see from the pictures . There are no rips or tears or splitting of any seams in the car. The carpets are brand new, and car is solid, quiet, and rattle free. Body and Paint The car was originally blue and was just professionally repainted about six months ago. You can see from one of the pictures the complete dis-assembly of all of the body panels and paint prep prior to the painting. There are no scratched or imperfections in the paint as you can see from all of the detailed pictures. The paint in some of the pictures appear to be darker than others, that's only because some pictures were taken on a bright sunny day and others were taken on another day when it was cloudy. Air Conditioning The air conditioning is ice cold, because the whole system has been removed serviced and replaced and much is brand new including a new A/C compressor and everything works beautifully. Cooling System This car has the 4" radiator with dual 12" fans, aluminum lines, all of the hoses have been replaced from the engine to the radiator. Gas Tank The gas tank has been removed cleaned and replaced with new gas lines and new filters with a new high performance fuel pump The Engine The engine is the original 351 Ford Cleveland engine which has been removed and completely rebuilt with new pistons, new bearings, new hydraulic lifters, with refurbished machined cylinder heads, with a new distributor and new aluminum rocker covers (a complete professional rebuild, a year, with less than 20 miles on the new engine.
